Democrat Congressman Raul Grijalva Dies At 77

The longtime Arizona representative lost his battle with cancer.

Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-AZ) has passed away at the age of 77 after a battle with cancer, his office confirmed in a statement Thursday. The longtime congressman, who represented Arizona’s 7th Congressional District for over two decades, died due to complications from his treatments.

Grijalva was a fixture in the Democratic Party, known for his advocacy on environmental issues and progressive policies. His office described him as a “kind and humble” leader who took pride in his staff and dedicated his career to expanding government programs, particularly in areas like public parks, childcare, healthcare, and housing.

  • Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) called his death a “genuinely devastating loss,” praising his commitment to working-class Americans.

  • Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) highlighted Grijalva’s role in pushing climate policies, calling him a “fearless fighter for change.”

  • Sen. John Curtis (R-UT), despite ideological differences, recognized Grijalva’s passion for public lands and national parks.

Grijalva’s leadership in the House Natural Resources Committee solidified his status as a key advocate for environmental policies. He was a strong proponent of expanding government intervention in land management, climate regulations, and social welfare programs.

His office assured constituents that services would continue during the transition period as Arizona prepares for a special election to fill his seat.

While Democrats mourn the loss of one of their most progressive members, the political landscape in Arizona is bound to shift, as his vacancy leaves an opportunity for a potential shift in congressional power.
