Colin Allred Denies Past Comments on ‘Racist Wall’ He Promised to Dismantle

Texas Senate candidate backtracks on divisive rhetoric as Cruz highlights his extreme position on border security.

Democrat Senate candidate Colin Allred (D-TX) faced criticism this week after he blatantly lied during an interview about past remarks he made regarding former President Donald Trump’s border wall. Allred, currently trailing Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) in the polls, claimed that his previous comments describing the wall as "racist" were taken "out of context." However, footage from Allred’s 2018 primary race tells a different story.

In campaign ads, Cruz has been quoting Allred directly: “If they build that racist wall, my generation is the one that will tear it down.” When confronted with the quote during a Sunday night interview, Allred dodged the question, dismissing the claim as being "out of context" and pivoted to attacking Cruz for not supporting the Democrats' border security bill—a bill many experts have warned would worsen the current crisis at the border.

A review of the original footage from 2018 confirms that Allred’s remarks were not only real but also delivered in full context during his primary campaign. Allred passionately denounced Trump’s immigration plan, labeling it a “racist plan” and pledging that if the border wall was built, “my generation will be the one that tears it down.”

Allred’s stance at the time was clear: “The symbol of this country cannot be a fence with barbed wire on top of it. It has to remain the Statue of Liberty.” He further blasted the border wall as a "racist campaign promise" that would waste billions of dollars.

Now, as he runs against Cruz in the Texas Senate race, Allred’s attempt to rewrite history and distance himself from these extreme remarks shows a desperate move to appeal to a broader electorate. Polls show Allred lagging behind Cruz, with many voters rejecting his previous stance on border security, especially amid the Biden administration's catastrophic handling of the southern border.

This latest misstep comes at a crucial moment in Allred's campaign. His refusal to acknowledge his own words not only undermines his credibility but also highlights the deep divide between Democrats and Republicans on border security. While Allred once labeled Trump’s efforts to secure the border as "racist," Texas voters are increasingly concerned about the real-life consequences of open-border policies that have led to record illegal crossings and a surge in crime and drug trafficking.

In contrast, Cruz has long advocated for stronger border security, pushing back against the Biden-Harris administration’s reckless handling of the crisis. His ads showcasing Allred’s own words are a reminder of the Democrats' out-of-touch policies that put American safety at risk.
