CNN Deletes Soft Framing Of Suspected ISIS Bomb Plotters

The network faced backlash after describing terror suspects as ordinary teenagers whose day “drastically changed” when they were arrested.

CNN quietly deleted a controversial social media post Tuesday after critics accused the network of downplaying a suspected terrorist attack in New York City.

The backlash erupted after the outlet published a post describing two suspects accused of throwing improvised explosive devices near a protest crowd outside the residence of New York City’s mayor.

Instead of emphasizing the seriousness of the alleged plot, the post framed the suspects in sympathetic terms.

“Two Pennsylvania teenagers crossed into New York City Saturday morning for what could’ve been a normal day enjoying the city during abnormally warm weather,” the message read.

“But in less than an hour, their lives would drastically change as the pair would be arrested for throwing homemade bombs.”

The language immediately triggered widespread criticism online, with many arguing the post appeared to minimize what authorities believe was an attempted terrorist attack.

Investigators say the suspects allegedly threw improvised explosive devices (IEDs) packed with shrapnel into a crowd of civilians. Authorities later said the suspects had expressed allegiance to ISIS after being taken into custody.

Security officials noted the attack could have caused catastrophic casualties if the devices had detonated properly.

The suspects are also accused of seeking to carry out an attack potentially more deadly than the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, which killed three people and injured more than 260 others.

Critics across the political spectrum mocked CNN’s framing of the incident.

Several commentators argued the network’s description sounded more like a coming-of-age story than a report about suspected terrorism.

Some of the criticism circulating online included remarks such as:

  • Observers sarcastically describing bomb-throwing as “classic teenager behavior.”

  • Critics accusing the network of minimizing extremist violence.

  • Media watchdog groups warning against “infantilizing” perpetrators of ideological attacks.

One media accountability group said the post illustrated a troubling trend in modern journalism.

“ISIS-inspired perpetrators commit a literal terrorist act, and this is what CNN comes up with?” the group wrote. “When will the media stop employing narrative storytelling to infantilize perpetrators of ideologically motivated crimes?”

Facing mounting criticism, CNN deleted the post and issued a statement acknowledging the problem.

“A post regarding the two individuals arrested for throwing homemade bombs outside the mayor’s home failed to reflect the gravity of the incident,” the network said. “It therefore has been deleted.”

The outlet also edited the original article associated with the social media post.

An editor’s note added to the story acknowledged that the original summary did not properly reflect the seriousness of the situation and had been updated.

However, critics pointed out that the language used in the social media post had originally appeared in the article itself before the piece was quietly revised.

The controversy highlights the intense scrutiny media organizations now face over how they frame politically charged incidents especially those involving terrorism.

Public trust in media institutions has declined significantly in recent years. According to a 2024 Gallup survey, only about 32% of Americans say they trust the mass media to report the news fully and fairly.

Events like the CNN controversy often fuel ongoing debates about whether major news outlets sometimes soften language when covering certain types of extremism.

For many observers, the episode serves as another reminder of how word choice in journalism can shape public understanding of serious national security threats.
