China Constructs Military Spy Base Close to U.S. Base in the Caribbean
Chinese Expansion in Cuba Signals Growing Threat to U.S. National Security.
Communist China is reportedly constructing a military spy base in Cuba near the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, as revealed by newly published satellite images. This alarming development highlights China's growing efforts to undermine U.S. national security.
The images, published by The Wall Street Journal, show the spy base is being built at El Salao, a town outside Santiago de Cuba. The construction, which began at the start of President Joe Biden’s administration, features a large formation of antennas known as a circularly disposed antenna array, designed to intercept electronic signals.
Proximity to U.S. Interests: The spy base’s location allows China to monitor the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, despite using older technology no longer employed by the U.S. and Russia.
Multiple Installations: This marks the fourth Chinese spy base in Cuba, with others located at Bejucal, Wajay, and Calabazar.
National Security Concerns: Intelligence officials warn these bases pose a severe threat, enabling China to intercept sensitive communications from U.S. military bases, space facilities, and commercial shipping, as well as spy on American citizens.
This news underscores China's broader strategy to expand its influence in Latin America and the Caribbean, aiming to weaken U.S. presence and replace it as the dominant global power. Examples of this aggressive expansion include:
Megaport in Peru: U.S. officials are concerned this project could shift regional power dynamics and economically coerce Latin American countries.
Influence in Argentina, Honduras, Colombia, and Brazil: China is pursuing various projects to extend its control over these nations.
Antigua Takeover: China is effectively taking over Antigua, just a few hundred miles from the U.S. Virgin Islands, by constructing a Chinese-run special economic zone. This zone will feature its own customs and immigration, a shipping port, a dedicated airline, and the ability to issue passports, according to Newsweek. Businesses in this zone will range from logistics to virology and even facial surgery.
China’s relentless expansion and espionage efforts represent a direct challenge to U.S. national security and regional stability. As Beijing continues to encroach on America's backyard, the Biden administration’s response to these developments will be crucial in safeguarding the nation's interests.
