Chiefs Family Mourns Young Relative Lost in Texas Flood Tragedy

Nine-year-old Janie Hunt among victims as Trump prepares Texas visit and NFL donates in support.

The devastating floods that tore through central Texas over the weekend have claimed at least 79 lives, with 41 still missing and among the victims is nine-year-old Janie Hunt, a member of one of the most well-known families in professional sports.

Tavia Hunt, wife of Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, confirmed in a heartfelt Instagram post that Janie, a young relative and camper at Camp Mystic, was one of those tragically lost. "Our hearts are broken by the devastation from the floods in Wimberley and the tragic loss of so many lives including a precious little Hunt cousin," she wrote.

Janie was the great-granddaughter of the late billionaire William Herbert Hunt and related to Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt. Her passing has left not only a family shattered but also a nation in mourning for the innocent lives swept away in seconds by a disaster no one saw coming.

In a time of sorrow, the questions of faith echo loudly.

Tavia Hunt spoke candidly about her Christian faith in the face of unimaginable tragedy: “How do we trust a God… who allows such terrible things to happen even to children?” She quoted Scripture and acknowledged the deep anguish many families are now feeling.

National leaders respond:

  • President Donald Trump expressed deep sympathy and confirmed plans to visit Texas this Friday. “It’s a horrible thing… Absolutely horrible,” he said, adding, “God bless the state of Texas.”

  • Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared a statewide day of prayer, calling on Texans to unite in faith and support.

  • Kristi Noem and DHS officials have pushed back on media narratives, saying the National Weather Service gave timely, accurate warnings but the rainfall was simply beyond anything forecast models could predict.

The sports world steps up:

The NFL, along with the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans, pledged $1.5 million to assist families and communities devastated by the flooding. “Together they will contribute to provide both immediate assistance and long-term resources,” the league announced.

This isn’t just a local tragedy it’s a national heartbreak. The storm, which President Trump called a “100-year catastrophe,” struck without warning, a chilling reminder of life’s fragility and the critical need for both community strength and real leadership in times of crisis.

As the Hunt family and countless others grieve unimaginable losses, may we as a nation remember what truly matters and recommit to protecting the most vulnerable, especially when nature strikes with fury.
