Jewish Man Shot on Way to Synagogue; Suspected Gunman Reportedly an Undocumented Immigrant

Community outrage grows after suspect in anti-Semitic shooting released into the U.S. last year.

The recent shooting of a Jewish man on his way to a synagogue in Chicago has taken a troubling turn after reports confirmed that the alleged gunman is an illegal immigrant who had previously been detained and released by U.S. immigration authorities. The suspect, 22-year-old Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, was identified as a Mauritanian national who entered the United States through the San Diego border in 2023, according to Fox News. The incident has fueled community outrage, especially given the apparent anti-Semitic motives behind the attack.

Abdallahi allegedly opened fire on the victim, a 39-year-old man, in Chicago’s West Rogers Park neighborhood early Saturday morning. Witnesses and security footage reportedly captured Abdallahi shouting “Allahu Akbar” as he returned to the scene within minutes, firing at police officers, paramedics, and passersby before he was injured in a shootout and taken to the hospital.

Local leaders expressed deep frustration that Abdallahi has not been charged with a hate crime, despite mounting evidence suggesting an anti-Semitic motive. Alderman Debra Silverstein voiced disappointment, saying, “Despite evidence that seems to suggest an antisemitic motive for the shooting, authorities did not file hate crime charges.” She added that Chicago police share her “disgust” over the targeting of a Jewish man, especially as it occurred during the Jewish holidays.

Adding to the frustration, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s statement condemning the shooting failed to mention the victim’s faith or acknowledge any possible anti-Semitic motive, a decision that has sparked criticism. Johnson, who recently voted in favor of an anti-Israel resolution, has faced mounting backlash over his silence on Chicago’s crime surge and, critics say, his tone-deaf approach to rising anti-Semitic incidents.

This incident sheds light on broader security risks tied to the current administration’s border policies. A recent congressional report revealed that more than 250 individuals on the terror watch list were encountered at the border under the Biden-Harris administration, with nearly 100 reportedly released into the U.S. Abdallahi’s ability to remain in the country without oversight despite his illegal status underscores the vulnerabilities in the immigration system that, as this case shows, could have severe consequences for Americans.

As anger continues to mount, community leaders are pressing for stronger enforcement and accountability in the wake of what they view as a failure to protect their safety.
