Historic California Wildfires Rack Up $50+ Billion in Damages
The disaster is on track to be the most expensive wildfire in U.S. history.
California is experiencing the most expensive wildfire disaster in U.S. history, with damages already estimated at over $50 billion and rising. As Los Angeles burns, tens of thousands of structures have been destroyed, and hundreds of thousands of residents have been displaced.
According to JPMorgan Chase, economic damages from the wildfires have already hit $50 billion, surpassing the previous record of $12.5 billion from the 2018 Camp Fire. Estimates from AccuWeather suggest the final total could range from $52 billion to $57 billion.
The Eaton and Palisades fires alone have destroyed 10,000 structures, and multiple fires continue to rage across the region.
Palisades Fire: Over 19,000 acres burned.
Eaton Fire: More than 13,000 acres consumed.
Kenneth Fire: Suspected arson case, growing rapidly.
200,000 residents forced to evacuate, with little relief in sight.
California should have been ready for this. Yet, failed leadership, poor forest management, and misplaced priorities have made the state increasingly vulnerable to devastating fires. Instead of focusing on prevention and emergency preparedness, officials have prioritized bureaucratic red tape and radical environmental policies that do little to prevent real disasters.
Meanwhile, dry fire hydrants, energy blackouts, and emergency response failures have left residents helpless as the fires spread.
For context, the most costly natural disasters in U.S. history include:
Hurricane Katrina (2005) – $100+ billion in damage.
Hurricane Ian (2022) – $55+ billion in insured losses.
California Wildfires (2024) – Already over $50 billion and climbing.
With multiple fires still uncontained, this catastrophe is far from over.
California desperately needs real leadership to fix infrastructure, strengthen emergency response, and prioritize fire prevention over political agendas. Until then, residents will continue to suffer under policies that leave them vulnerable to disaster.
