Governor Burgum Supports Trump Against Leftist Anger Over Fair Election Demands

North Dakota governor stands by Trump’s calls for election integrity amidst Democrat attacks.

North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum stepped up in defense of Donald Trump over the weekend, backing the former president’s insistence on ensuring election integrity in the 2024 presidential race. Trump’s recent social media post warning against election cheating has sparked outrage from the Left, who are now accusing him of "threatening" election workers and officials. However, Burgum rejected these claims, stating that Trump’s concerns are about safeguarding free and fair elections.

During an interview on NBC’s "Meet The Press," host Kristen Welker brought up Trump’s post, in which he vowed to hold accountable those involved in cheating in the 2020 election and promised to scrutinize the upcoming 2024 race. Trump’s post read:

“I, together with many Attorneys and Legal Scholars, am watching the Sanctity of the 2024 Presidential Election very closely those people that CHEATED will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the Law, which will include long-term prison sentences so that this Depravity of Justice does not happen again.”

Welker framed the post as a threat against election workers, but Burgum pushed back, emphasizing that Trump is focused on “making sure that our elections are free and fair.” Burgum highlighted the fragmented nature of U.S. elections, which are conducted across more than 3,000 counties, each with different rules and standards.

“I think what President Trump is saying is, we’re going to have free and fair elections, and everybody’s got to follow the rules,” Burgum said.

Welker continued to press the point, accusing Trump of targeting political operatives and election officials. Burgum, however, remained firm in his support for election integrity efforts. He pointed out that several states have only recently begun cleaning up their voter rolls, a necessary measure to ensure the accuracy of the voter database.

“This is just common sense database clean-up,” Burgum said. He compared the situation to a business, arguing that no successful company could operate with an outdated customer list. “You’re still sending them a ballot, in this case. And so I think there’s a number of basic things that we can all agree on that would make sure that the elections are free and fair.”

As Democrats continue to ramp up their attacks on Trump’s focus on election integrity, many Republicans see it as a necessary conversation to address the gaps that led to widespread distrust in the 2020 election process. With states only now updating their voter rolls and addressing vulnerabilities, Trump’s warnings are a call to action, not a threat.
