Brothers' Police Brutality Allegations Refuted by Video of Initial Attack
Attorney steps aside as new evidence contradicts initial claims of police misconduct.
In a dramatic turn of events, newly released footage has shown two brothers, who initially claimed to be victims of police brutality, attacking police officers first. This revelation has led their attorney, Akhmed Yakoob, to step aside from representing them.
The incident, which occurred at Manchester Airport on July 23, gained widespread attention after initial footage showed a police officer stomping on 19-year-old Mohammed Fahir Khan's head while he lay face down on the floor. This led to significant public outrage and calls for the Greater Manchester Police (GMP) to address the apparent brutality. The officer involved was subsequently “removed from operational duties.”
Key Points:
Initial Incident: The original footage showed a police officer stomping on Fahir's head, prompting accusations of police brutality.
New Evidence: Additional footage revealed the brothers, Mohammed Fahir Khan, 19, and Amaad Khan, 25, attacking police officers first, contradicting their claims of being innocent victims.
Attorney Steps Aside: Akhmed Yakoob, the brothers' attorney, stepped aside following the release of the new footage, which undermined the brothers' allegations.
Assistant Chief Constable Wasim Chaudhry of the GMP acknowledged the public's concern over the initial video, describing the force used as an unusual occurrence. The incident began with officers responding to a report of an assault in Terminal 2. When officers attempted to arrest one of the suspects seen on CCTV, the situation escalated violently.
The initial footage led to widespread protests, accusing the GMP of racism. However, the second video, which showed the brothers attacking police officers, has prompted calls for a more measured response. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham urged the public “not to rush to judgment” given the complexity of the situation and the ongoing investigation.
Yakoob, who has a significant following on TikTok, released a statement explaining his decision to step aside. “The media have tried to sabotage me, it’s not the first time they’ve done this,” he said, adding that the focus had shifted unfairly onto him rather than the issue of police conduct.
Yakoob recommended a new lawyer for the brothers and reiterated his stance against violence, whether from police officers or civilians. “I’d like to say that I am not for violence, whether it’s from police officers or whether it’s from civilians. Always remember that,” he stated.
The unfolding case highlights the complexities of such incidents and the importance of thorough investigations before drawing conclusions. As the investigation continues, both the public and the authorities will be closely monitoring the developments to ensure justice is served appropriately.
