Beach Boys Icon Brian Wilson’s Cause of Death Confirmed
Music legend died of respiratory arrest with multiple serious health conditions contributing.

The official cause of death has been released for Brian Wilson, the musical genius behind the Beach Boys and a defining figure in American pop history. Wilson passed away at age 82, and according to his death certificate, the cause was respiratory arrest a condition where the lungs stop functioning even though the heart continues to beat.
The certificate also listed multiple contributing conditions, including sepsis, chronic kidney disease, a neurodegenerative disorder, cystitis, and obstructive sleep apnea a stark reminder of the many health battles Wilson faced in his final years.
Wilson was placed under a conservatorship in the final year of his life due to cognitive decline following the death of his wife, Melinda.
He battled mental illness for decades, often opening up about his struggles with depression and stage fright.
The Beach Boys, founded by Wilson at just 19, revolutionized American music with hits like “Good Vibrations” and “God Only Knows.”
For millions, Wilson was more than just a songwriter he was a symbol of California cool, the voice behind a generation’s soundtrack. But behind the music was a man who fought deeply personal demons, enduring decades of both creative triumphs and emotional turmoil.
Wilson’s family announced the conservatorship last year, stating that the move was designed to protect the family home and keep Wilson comfortable after the loss of his wife. “Brian will be able to enjoy all of his family and friends and continue to work on current projects,” they said at the time.
While his passing marks the end of an era, Wilson’s legacy lives on not just in record sales or awards, but in the spirit of the American sound he helped create.
