Brazil Criticizes Trump Administration for Deporting Illegals in Handcuffs

Socialist president Lula da Silva demands answers over U.S. deportation practices.

Tensions between Brazil and the United States are escalating after 88 Brazilian citizens were deported from the U.S. in handcuffs, sparking outrage from Brazil’s socialist government. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has accused the Trump administration of “degrading” treatment and summoned U.S. diplomat Gabriel Escobar for explanations.

The controversy arose after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deported the illegal immigrants, following standard procedures that include the use of restraints to ensure safety during flights. Brazilian officials, however, claim the practice violates agreements requiring “dignified, respectful, and humane treatment” of deportees.

Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the handcuffing as a violation of human dignity. Justice Minister Ricardo Lewandowski said, “Respect for the dignity of people and for fundamental human rights are values that must guide relations between civilized nations, especially in situations when vulnerable groups are involved.”

The deportation flight reportedly experienced maintenance issues, resulting in unscheduled stops in Panama and Manaus, Brazil. Passengers were eventually transferred to a Brazilian Air Force plane for the remainder of the journey. Complaints from deportees included allegations of mistreatment and lack of air conditioning during the flight.

Carlos Vinicius de Jesus, one of the deportees, claimed in a Brazilian interview that ICE agents made threats during the flight. However, these claims have not been verified.

The use of restraints during deportations is not new. Both the Trump and Biden administrations have upheld the practice to ensure safety for officers and pilots. ICE maintains that these measures are necessary, particularly when dealing with individuals who pose security risks.

The deportations come as part of President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration, a key campaign promise. Thousands of illegal immigrants have been deported under his administration, including gang members, pedophiles, and individuals convicted of violent crimes. Last week, ICE Boston arrested Brazilian citizen Vitor De Sousa-Lima, convicted of vehicular manslaughter.

President Lula da Silva’s sharp rhetoric against Trump has further strained U.S.-Brazil relations. Lula, an outspoken critic of Trump, previously aligned himself with Kamala Harris during the 2020 U.S. election and accused Trump of fostering “fascism and Nazism.”

In contrast, Lula’s predecessor Jair Bolsonaro nicknamed the “Trump of the Tropics” maintained a warm relationship with Trump. However, Bolsonaro was blocked from attending Trump’s inauguration by Brazil’s Supreme Court, which has aggressively targeted right-wing figures in the country.

The deportations have drawn the attention of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, which plans to hold an emergency session to address the issue. While Brazil presses for answers, the Trump administration continues to defend its immigration enforcement as a necessary step to uphold the rule of law and protect public safety.

Despite criticism, the Trump administration remains firm on its approach to illegal immigration. ICE has emphasized the need for strict enforcement, noting that many deportees have criminal records or pose a threat to public safety.

This diplomatic spat highlights the sharp contrast between Lula’s globalist policies and Trump’s America-first agenda. With Lula’s government demanding concessions and Trump doubling down on enforcement, the clash underscores the ideological divide shaping U.S.-Brazil relations.
