Bragg Scheduled for Congressional Testimony Immediately After Trump Sentenced
Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg and key prosecutor to appear before GOP-led House committee.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is scheduled to testify before a GOP-led House committee next month, just one day after former President Donald Trump is set to be sentenced following his guilty verdict in a New York hush-money case. The hearing, reported by The New York Times, is planned for July 12.
Matthew Colangelo, a prosecutor scrutinized for joining Bragg’s team from a senior role at the Biden administration’s Department of Justice (DOJ), is also expected to testify. Bragg’s office confirmed their voluntary appearance, condemning “dangerous misinformation, baseless claims, and conspiracy theories” that followed Trump’s guilty verdict.
Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH), who also heads the Weaponization panel, had previously pushed for Bragg to testify on June 13 about the DA’s office operations. Bragg agreed to testify but requested a new date until after the Trump case concluded.
This week’s hearing will proceed as planned, featuring witnesses like Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey, former Federal Election Commission Commissioner Trey Trainor, and Baker Hostetler counsel Elizabeth Price Foley.
In late May, a jury convicted Trump on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to allegedly cover up a tryst with adult film star Stormy Daniels, part of a “catch-and-kill” scheme to influence the 2016 election. Trump, who denied the affair and pleaded not guilty, has vowed to appeal. Bragg commended the jury, asserting that his team followed “the facts and the law without fear or favor.” Sentencing is scheduled for July 11, with uncertainty about whether Trump will face prison time.
Republicans argue that Bragg’s motivations are politically driven, highlighting how federal authorities chose not to pursue the hush-money case. Concerns also surround Colangelo’s history, which includes leading a civil inquiry against Trump in New York before joining the DOJ.
The DOJ, responding to Jordan’s demand for information suggesting a coordinated effort, stated that a “comprehensive search” found no communications between the Manhattan DA and DOJ leadership regarding Trump’s investigation and prosecution.
As Trump campaigns for another term in the White House, he faces three additional criminal investigations at the state and federal levels related to his handling of classified documents and the 2020 election. Throughout these challenges, Trump has maintained his innocence.
