Border Crossings Drop 90 Percent as Trump’s Crackdown Takes Effect

Illegal immigration hits historic lows as decisive enforcement restores order at the southern border.

Illegal border crossings have plummeted to levels not seen in decades, thanks to President Trump’s decisive crackdown on illegal immigration. New federal data confirm that border security efforts are working, with crossings dropping by a staggering 90% compared to last year.

Early reports from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reveal that only 359 illegal migrants are being processed daily at the southern border a stark contrast to the more than 4,800 per day under the Biden administration just one year ago. Through February 11, CBP had recorded only 3,953 encounters, putting the month on track to see fewer than 10,000 crossings, a number comparable to April 2017, when President Trump first secured the border.

Several key factors have contributed to this drastic decline:

  • Stronger enforcement: ICE arrested 11,000 illegal migrants in just 18 days, signaling that the administration means business.

  • Ending “catch and release”: Migrants are no longer being released into the country with flimsy court dates years in the future. Instead, they are swiftly detained and processed.

  • Deportation flights resuming: The administration restarted deportation flights to Venezuela, sending a clear message that illegal crossings won’t be rewarded.

  • Mexico’s cooperation: After President Trump threatened tariffs, Mexico deployed 10,000 troops to its northern border to curb migration before it reaches the U.S.

The dramatic turnaround at the border highlights the importance of strong leadership. Under Biden, border crossings surged to record highs, overwhelming cities and draining resources. Now, under Trump’s firm policies, Border Patrol agents finally have the backing they need to secure the nation.

“This is a very, very low number,” said John Gramlich of the Pew Research Center, emphasizing how rare such figures are in modern history. Mark Krikorian of the Center for Immigration Studies went even further, saying, “We haven’t had numbers this low since the 1960s.”

Border communities are breathing a sigh of relief. Sheriff Thaddeus Cleveland in Texas described the change as a “relief,” pointing to the stark contrast from the chaos of previous months.

With illegal crossings in freefall and law enforcement regaining control, one thing is clear: real border security is only possible under strong, America-first leadership.
