Dan Bongino to Step Down as FBI Deputy Director in January
Trump loyalist exits top FBI post after restoring integrity, as Deep State loyalists quietly regroup.

In a move that has sparked headlines and no shortage of speculation FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino announced he will resign from his position in January, capping off a historic tenure that broke the mold and sent shockwaves through the Deep State establishment.
Bongino, a former Secret Service agent and prominent conservative voice, took to X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday to confirm the news.
“I will be leaving my position with the FBI in January,” Bongino wrote. “I want to thank President Trump, AG Pam Bondi, and Director Kash Patel for the opportunity to serve with purpose... God bless America, and all those who defend Her.”
President Donald Trump, who appointed Bongino to the No. 2 role at the FBI, confirmed the move earlier in the day at Joint Base Andrews.
“Dan did a great job. I think he wants to go back to his show,” Trump said, referencing Bongino’s popular political commentary platform.
Bongino’s appointment was a major departure from precedent. Traditionally, the FBI’s deputy director has come from within the agency's own ranks. Bongino’s elevation to the post shattered that tradition and infuriated career bureaucrats who were more interested in political survival than protecting the Constitution.
Though critics scoffed at his lack of FBI experience, Bongino brought something far more critical to the table: loyalty to the Constitution, not the Washington swamp. Under Director Kash Patel’s leadership, Bongino helped rein in bureaucratic overreach and pushed back on the weaponization of federal law enforcement.
His departure comes as rumors swirl about internal resistance within the FBI as the Trump team moves to cleanse agencies long hijacked by partisan operatives. And with the 2024 election approaching, the pressure on true public servants like Bongino has only increased.
The FBI Agents Association noted that Bongino was the first deputy director in over a century without prior FBI experience a point of pride for reformers, and a sore spot for the agency's old guard.
Andrew Bailey, co-deputy director since September, will remain in place reporting to Director Patel.
Bongino’s position, like the Director’s, does not require Senate confirmation a key factor that allowed Trump to bypass obstructionist Democrats and install real change agents.
Let’s not forget: Bongino has long warned about the rot inside federal institutions. And unlike the bureaucrats who grift off government power, he stepped into the fray to do something about it. Now, with his mission complete, he’s returning to the fight from the outside likely with a much louder microphone.
Bongino’s departure is not a retreat. It’s a strategic shift. And while the media will spin this as a setback, it’s exactly the kind of move a patriot makes when the next battle looms. Count on him continuing to expose corruption and defend American liberty just not behind a government desk.
