Black Lives Matter Opposes Kamala Harris's Nomination

BLM Demands Democratic Process in Response to Harris's Nomination.

In a bold statement, the Black Lives Matter Organization has rejected the likely nomination of Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee. This development follows President Joe Biden’s abrupt withdrawal from the 2024 race and his endorsement of Harris.

BLM took to Twitter to criticize the Democratic Party’s approach to securing Harris’s nomination, pointing out that she had not won any delegates in the primaries. "A 24-hour process of talking to party bosses is not democratic, nor is it a process Democrats should be proud of," the tweet read. "We do not live in a dictatorship. Delegates are not oligarchs. Installing Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee and an unknown vice president without any public voting process would make the modern Democratic Party a party of hypocrites. We call on the @DNC to create a process that allows for public participation in the nomination process, not just a nomination by party delegates."

The organization demanded an immediate, informal, virtual snap primary across the country before the Democratic National Convention in August. This call for a more democratic process reflects BLM's dissatisfaction with the current approach to Harris’s nomination.

This stance may seem contradictory given Harris's past support for BLM. In September 2020, amid nationwide protests, Harris praised the group, stating, “I always am going to interpret these protests as an essential component of evolution in our country.”

BLM's insistence on a democratic process stands in stark contrast to the Marxist leanings of at least two of its founders, Alicia Garza and Patrisse Cullors. Garza has previously highlighted the influence of Marx and Lenin on global social movements, and both she and Cullors have openly identified as trained Marxists. Cullors has stated, “I do believe in Marxism. It’s a philosophy that I learned really early on in my organizing career.”

The organization’s website once included a passage that aligned with Marxist ideology, advocating for the disruption of the “Western-prescribed nuclear family structure.” This page has since been removed.

As Harris secures the necessary delegates for the Democratic nomination, BLM’s call for a more inclusive and democratic nomination process underscores the internal conflicts and ideological divides within the party.
