Bill Maher Blasts Hollywood as ‘Woke Town’ After Golden Globes Snub
Outspoken comedian says he’ll never win because the industry can’t handle free speech.

Bill Maher just confirmed what many Americans already suspect Hollywood doesn’t reward free thinkers, especially those who challenge the Left’s ideological grip on the entertainment industry.
During an episode of his podcast Club Random, filmed before Sunday’s Golden Globes, the 69-year-old comedian predicted the outcome: he’d lose, not because he lacked talent, but because he refuses to bow to the Left’s orthodoxy.
“I’ve been nominated for 33 Emmys, and they would never give it to me,” Maher told actor Joel Edgerton. “That’s not a gag number. That’s a real number. It’s crazy.”
Maher, known for bucking liberal talking points and taking aim at the Left’s “woke” extremism, said the real reason for the snubs is simple: “I speak freely. And this woke town f*cking hates that. And that’s okay. I’ve made my peace with that.”
Maher was nominated this year for Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television, but lost to none other than fellow industry rebel Ricky Gervais, who famously torched Hollywood elites during the 2020 Golden Globes. Gervais, not one to play by the Left’s rules either, wasn’t even in attendance but still won for his Netflix special Morality.
He later posted on X “I f*cking won. Again.”
But even Gervais’ win couldn’t escape the Left’s ideological claws. Presenter Wanda Sykes hijacked the moment to make it all about identity politics taking the opportunity to mock both Gervais and Maher.
“There’s some people pissed off that a queer black woman is up here doing the job of two mediocre white guys,” Sykes said while announcing the award.
She then looked directly at Maher and added, “You give us so much. But I would love a little less. Just try less.”
The camera caught Maher’s reaction stone-faced, unamused, and likely thinking what many Americans are: this isn’t comedy anymore, it’s cultural policing.
Hollywood’s elite only tolerate “edgy” speech if it aligns with progressive dogma. Anyone who questions the party line, especially on issues like gender ideology, cancel culture, or political correctness, is quickly pushed to the margins.
And Maher, for all his past liberalism, has become one of the few voices on the Left willing to call out the insanity. Whether it's defending free speech, criticizing transgender extremism, or pointing out the hypocrisy of identity politics, Maher has found himself increasingly alienated from the very industry that once embraced him.
But he’s not alone.
Ricky Gervais, a five-time Golden Globes host, has repeatedly roasted Hollywood’s smug virtue-signaling and cancel culture nonsense.
Comedians like Dave Chappelle have faced intense backlash for challenging woke narratives yet remain wildly popular with audiences.
A 2023 Gallup poll found only 36% of Americans trust the entertainment industry, a record low.
The reason? Americans are tired of being preached to by a coastal elite that treats disagreement as heresy and hands out awards not for talent, but for ideological conformity.
Bill Maher’s snub wasn’t about merit it was about message control. In today’s Hollywood, if you don’t check the right boxes, don’t expect the hardware.
