Biden Claims He’ll Only Drop Out If “The Lord Almighty” Commands
The president dismisses party concerns, asserting his qualification to beat Trump.
President Joe Biden declared on Friday that the only scenario in which he would abandon his re-election campaign is if “the Lord Almighty comes down and tells” him to quit. Biden made this assertion during an interview with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos, aiming to quell dissent within his own party pushing for his withdrawal.
Key points to consider:
Biden emphasized his belief that he is the most qualified candidate to defeat Donald Trump and get things done.
He dismissed hypotheticals about stepping down, even if pressured by top Democrats or faced with losing control of the House and Senate.
Biden reiterated his commitment to running, bolstered by endorsements from influential party figures.
“I convinced myself of two things,” Biden said. “I’m the most qualified person to beat him, and I know how to get things done.”
When Stephanopoulos asked if Biden would stand down if convinced he couldn’t defeat Trump, Biden responded, “It depends on if the Lord Almighty comes down and tells me that, I might do that.”
Addressing the possibility of top Democrats expressing concerns over his candidacy threatening their control of Congress, Biden stated, “I’d go into detail with them. I’ve spoken to all of them in detail including Jim Clyburn, every one of ’em. They all said I should stay in the race– stay in the race. No one said– none of the people said I should leave.”
Biden reiterated his confidence, saying, “They’re not gonna do that,” when asked how he would respond if party leaders asked him to step aside. He added, “Look. I mean, if the Lord Almighty came down and said, ‘Joe, get outta the race,’ I’d get outta the race. The Lord Almighty’s not comin’ down. I mean, these hypotheticals, George.”
Biden underscored his ongoing communication with key Democratic figures, mentioning recent meetings and conversations with individuals such as Hakeem Jeffries, Jim Clyburn, and Chuck Schumer. “I talk with them regularly,” he said, noting extensive discussions with governors and other leaders.
When pressed again about potential party pressure to leave the race, Biden firmly stated, “I’m not gonna answer that question. It’s not gonna happen.”
Biden’s remarks highlight his steadfast resolve to continue his re-election campaign, undeterred by internal party debates and determined to present himself as the best candidate to lead the country and challenge Trump in the upcoming election.
