Biden-Harris Administration Urges Israel to Show Restraint Toward Iran Following Missile Attack
The White House urges restraint as Israel faces mounting threats from the Iranian regime.
The Biden-Harris administration is urging Israel to hold back on retaliating too forcefully against Iran, despite the Islamic regime firing nearly 200 ballistic missiles into Israel earlier this week. The missile barrage forced millions of Israelis into bomb shelters, but in the aftermath, U.S. officials appear more focused on limiting Israel’s response than supporting a robust defense.
Shortly after the attack, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan initially pledged “severe consequences” for Iran’s aggression, stating that the U.S. would work with Israel to ensure it was held accountable. However, in the days that followed, the Biden administration has shifted its tone, urging Israel to consider less aggressive alternatives.
When asked if he supported Israel striking Iran’s nuclear facilities, President Biden gave a firm “no,” signaling a reluctance to endorse any major military response. By Friday, Biden had also voiced opposition to Israel targeting Iran’s oil infrastructure, a key source of funding for the regime’s terrorist proxies, including Hezbollah and Hamas.
“If I were in [Israel’s] shoes, I’d be thinking about other alternatives than striking oilfields,” Biden remarked, suggesting that a direct attack on Iran’s economic assets could have broader repercussions.
This hesitancy from the White House comes at a critical time. Iran has repeatedly funded and armed terrorist groups across the Middle East, and despite the missile barrage causing minimal casualties, Israel remains under constant threat. Tehran’s leaders continue to chant “death to Israel” and “death to America,” and Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has even set a public countdown clock to the year 2040, by which he claims Israel will be destroyed.
A top U.S. State Department official admitted on Friday that there were “no guarantees” that Israel wouldn’t strike Iran’s nuclear facilities, especially after the damage Israel inflicted on Hezbollah and Hamas in recent months.
With Iran growing increasingly desperate and isolated, Israel could still opt for a stronger military response despite Washington’s calls for restraint. The threat from Iran’s nuclear program remains very real, and Israeli leaders know they may not have the luxury of waiting for American approval to defend their nation’s security.
