Biden Calls for Immediate Investigation Following Attempted Rally Assassination
President Biden calls for unity and confirms conversation with Trump following attack.
President Joe Biden addressed the nation from the White House on Sunday afternoon, calling for a “thorough and swift” investigation into the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Speaking after a meeting with his homeland security team in the Situation Room, Biden emphasized the need for a comprehensive review of the security protocols that failed to prevent the attack.
“I’ve instructed that this investigation be thorough and swift, and the investigators will have every resource they need to get this done,” Biden said. “I’ve directed an independent review of national security at yesterday’s rally to assess exactly what happened and we’ll share the results of that independent review with the American people.”
Key Points:
Investigation Directive: Biden orders an independent and swift investigation into the security breach at the Trump rally.
Call for Unity: Emphasizing national unity, Biden insists on not making assumptions about the shooter’s motives.
Personal Communication: Biden confirms he spoke with Trump, offering well wishes and prayers for his recovery.
Biden cautioned against jumping to conclusions about the shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, noting that the motives behind the attack are still unknown. “The assassination attempt is contrary to everything we stand for as a nation,” Biden stated. “Unity is the most elusive goal of all, and nothing is more important than that right now. Unity. We will debate and we’ll disagree. That’s not going to change, but we’re going to not lose sight of who we are as Americans.”
Biden confirmed that he had a brief but positive conversation with Trump following the incident. “Last night I spoke with Donald Trump. I am sincerely grateful that he is doing well and recovering and we had a short but good conversation,” Biden shared. “Jill and I are keeping him and his family in our prayers.”
Expressing condolences, Biden also addressed the family of Corey Comperatore, a 50-year-old father and firefighter who was killed while shielding his family during the attack. “We also extend our deepest condolences to the family of the victim who was killed. He was a father. He was protecting his family from the bullets that were being fired and he lost his life. God love him.”
In addition to the investigation, Biden has called for the Secret Service to reassess and ensure the security arrangements for the upcoming Republican National Convention in Wisconsin. He reiterated the importance of unity and resilience in the face of such violence.
Biden announced that he will further address the nation from the Oval Office on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET. “We must unite as one nation to demonstrate who we are,” he concluded.
