72% of Voters Find Biden Unfit to Serve, Post-Debate Poll Reveals
Growing doubts about Biden’s cognitive health shake Democratic confidence.
In the wake of a troubling debate performance, a new CBS News and YouGov poll reveals that 72% of registered voters believe President Joe Biden is unfit to serve as commander in chief. The poll underscores the growing skepticism about the 81-year-old president's mental and cognitive abilities.
Key Findings:
Widespread Doubt: A striking 72% of registered voters question Biden’s fitness for office, a significant rise from 65% earlier in June. Only 27% believe he has the necessary mental acuity.
Democratic Concerns: Among Democratic voters, 41% now express doubts about Biden’s capability, up from 29% just a few weeks prior.
Comparison with Trump: In contrast, 50% of registered voters believe former President Donald Trump, 78, possesses the cognitive health to serve, though 49% disagree.
The debate performance has evidently rattled even Biden's base, with the New York Times’ editorial board reportedly advocating for Biden to step aside. Democratic leaders are scrambling as internal pressure mounts. A recent Biden campaign email attempted to downplay the issue, comparing Biden’s polling against Trump to that of other Democrats like Vice President Kamala Harris and California Governor Gavin Newsom. The data, however, shows little difference in polling outcomes.
The poll also highlights the broader voter sentiment:
Voter Discontent: 72% of voters now believe Biden should not run for re-election, up from 63% in February.
Age and Competency: Voters cite Biden's age, decision-making capabilities, presidential record, and campaign effectiveness as primary concerns.
Democratic Division: Despite these concerns, 55% of Democratic voters still believe Biden should continue his campaign, while 45% suggest he should step aside.
Conducted from June 28-29, the CBS News and YouGov poll surveyed 1,130 registered voters and has a margin of error of ±4.2 points. These findings come at a critical juncture as the 2024 elections loom, casting a shadow over Biden's campaign and fueling uncertainty within the Democratic Party.
