Biden Blames Media for Bad News as Presidency Winds Down
The outgoing president deflects blame for national discontent during his final Thanksgiving in office.
President Joe Biden used his final Thanksgiving as commander in chief to complain about media coverage, blaming negative reporting for the widespread belief that the country is headed in the wrong direction. Speaking from Nantucket, Massachusetts, Biden claimed that even good news “doesn’t sell very well” and hinted that the media’s focus on “bad news” has exacerbated Americans’ concerns about the future.
“You turn on the television, you don’t see a lot of good news,” Biden remarked when asked for his message to worried Americans. While insisting he wasn’t criticizing reporters, Biden suggested that the problem lies with how news is delivered, lamenting that fewer Americans rely on mainstream outlets and that the negativity dominates the narrative.
Biden’s remarks come as his presidency nears its end following a decisive defeat for Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. Biden himself abandoned his reelection bid in July after mounting concerns about his age, cognitive health, and inability to connect with voters. His withdrawal followed a series of gaffes and a fumbling debate performance that left even his closest allies uneasy.
Polls consistently showed Americans dissatisfied with Biden’s leadership, with economic concerns, rising crime, and chaotic foreign policy dominating the public’s discontent. His presidency, defined by a struggling economy and rising inflation, left millions skeptical about the Democratic Party’s ability to lead.
During his Thanksgiving remarks, Biden expressed his desire to ensure a smooth transition of power to President-elect Donald Trump. He also criticized Trump’s pledge to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico if they fail to address drug trafficking and illegal immigration, calling the proposal “counterproductive.”
The contrast between Biden’s somber remarks and Trump’s fiery Thanksgiving message on X couldn’t be starker. Trump, celebrating his landslide victory, vowed to restore America’s strength and promised a future where Americans could once again take pride in their country.
“Don’t worry,” Trump assured supporters, “our Country will soon be respected, productive, fair, and strong, and you will be, more than ever before, proud to be an American!”
Biden’s final months in office reflect the broader frustrations that have defined his presidency. From foreign policy blunders to skyrocketing inflation and faltering public trust, his tenure has often been marked by struggles to connect with the concerns of ordinary Americans.
As Biden exits the stage, his attempt to shift blame onto the media for the country’s woes feels like a final grasp at relevance, even as the nation looks ahead to a new era under Trump’s leadership.
