Biden Gave Iran Access to Billions in Frozen Assets After Election

Billions in frozen assets released under the guise of "humanitarian aid" spark outrage.

President Joe Biden's administration has quietly handed the Islamic Republic of Iran access to $10 billion in frozen assets, marking a significant shift in U.S. foreign policy. This decision, made shortly after the Democrats suffered election losses, has ignited outrage over its potential to embolden the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism.

A non-public order obtained by the Free Beacon revealed that the Biden State Department waived sanctions to allow Iran to access the funds. The move was justified under claims of being "in the national security interest of the United States."

This decision permits Iran to convert the funds into euros, held in Oman, enabling easier access for international transactions. Previously, under the Trump administration, Iran was restricted to an escrow account in Baghdad, complicating its ability to use the funds freely.

The administration insists the funds are earmarked exclusively for humanitarian purposes, including food and medicine. However, critics argue that money is fungible, meaning it can be redirected for other uses, including financing terrorism.

Iran has long been the chief financier of Middle Eastern terrorism, from funding Hamas and Hezbollah to supporting destabilizing proxies across the region. These concerns were tragically underscored during Hamas’s brutal attack on Israel on October 7.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi made it clear during an interview last year that Iran would allocate the funds at its discretion. Asked by NBC’s Lester Holt whether the money would strictly serve humanitarian purposes, Raisi responded, “The Islamic Republic of Iran will decide to spend it wherever we need it.”

These statements expose the Biden administration's weak assurances as hollow. Iran’s government has a long-standing record of defiance and misuse of international funds under the guise of humanitarian aid.

The decision to grant Iran access to billions in unfrozen assets without stringent oversight undermines America's standing and security. Critics warn this move emboldens adversaries and signals a retreat in the face of aggression.

The timing of this policy shortly after a decisive Republican surge in elections raises additional questions about the administration's priorities and accountability.

Our nation cannot afford to empower regimes that have repeatedly demonstrated their hostility toward American allies and values. It’s time for leadership that prioritizes the safety and future of the United States over placating dangerous regimes.
