Biden’s Farewell Letter America Is 'Stronger' and 'More Prosperous'

A farewell letter paints a rosy picture, but critics call out a legacy of economic woes and security failures.

In his final days as president, Joe Biden released a farewell letter Wednesday morning claiming that the United States is “stronger” and “more prosperous” now than it was four years ago. The letter comes ahead of his planned farewell address from the Oval Office, where he will cap off a presidency marked by economic turmoil, border insecurity, and growing international crises.

Biden called the presidency the “privilege” of his life, touting accomplishments such as job creation, climate change programs, and gun control legislation. “Four years ago, we stood in a winter of peril and a winter of possibilities,” Biden wrote. “But we came together as Americans, and we braved through it. We emerged stronger, more prosperous, and more secure.”

The president claimed credit for creating 16.6 million new jobs and reducing inflation, asserting that America has the “strongest economy in the world.” However, this narrative ignores the realities many Americans have faced under his administration:

  • Historic Inflation: Americans saw a 40-year high in inflation, which peaked at over 9% in 2022. Prices for groceries, gas, and housing skyrocketed, squeezing middle-class families.

  • Plummeting Savings: U.S. household savings rates hit record lows under Biden, with families burning through their reserves just to stay afloat.

  • Energy Crisis: Biden’s war on American energy independence, including banning offshore drilling and canceling the Keystone XL pipeline, led to higher energy prices and reliance on foreign oil.

Biden also claimed to have “secured our border,” a statement that will undoubtedly raise eyebrows across the nation. His administration oversaw the worst border crisis in U.S. history, with over 2.3 million illegal border crossings reported in 2022 alone. The decision to sell off border wall materials in his final weeks further undercuts his claims of securing the southern border.

Biden highlighted key pieces of legislation he signed during his tenure, such as the Inflation Reduction Act, which poured nearly $1 trillion into environmental spending, and the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which expanded gun control. Critics, however, argue these measures have done little to address pressing issues:

  • The Inflation Reduction Act failed to meaningfully curb inflation while redirecting taxpayer dollars toward climate initiatives that many Americans do not prioritize.

  • Expanded gun control measures faced backlash for targeting law-abiding gun owners instead of addressing the root causes of crime.

Biden’s final weeks in office have been marked by decisions seemingly aimed at undercutting the incoming Trump administration. These include:

  • Selling off unused border wall materials.

  • Banning offshore drilling across most of the U.S. coastline.

  • Canceling additional student loans.

  • Commuting the sentences of federal death row inmates convicted of murder.

Biden’s farewell address is likely to reflect the same tone as his letter: a self-congratulatory narrative that clashes with the lived experiences of millions of Americans. As his approval ratings hit record lows, many are ready to move on from a presidency that left the country more divided, less secure, and economically battered.
