Berlin’s Mayor Defends Flying Israel’s Flag Amid Anti-Semitic Accusations
Kai Wegner firmly stands by Israel, condemning false accusations of genocide and anti-Semitism in Germany.
When Berlin’s mayor, Kai Wegner, was confronted with accusations that Israel was committing “genocide,” his response was swift and unequivocal. The questioner attempted to conflate the Israeli-Palestinian conflict with genocide, but Wegner wasn’t having it. “So it’s not happening. Period. And I won’t allow it, either,” he fired back, making it clear that Berlin would not fall victim to anti-Israel propaganda.
Wegner made it crystal clear why the Israeli flag flies outside his office, invoking Germany’s dark history with the Jewish people. He stated that the flags would remain in place until the fate of the hostages held by Hamas terrorists in Gaza is resolved. “As long as there is still hope that one of these hostages will be returned to their families, the Israeli flag will hang in front of the ruling mayor’s official residence,” he declared.
Wegner’s refusal to pander to anti-Israel sentiment was not just about today’s political climate; it was rooted in the recognition of Germany’s responsibility. He referenced the painful lessons of World War II and condemned those trying to equate Israel’s actions with Nazi atrocities. For Wegner, it was clear that some people have learned nothing from history.
In February, he reiterated his strong pro-Israel stance on X, saying, “Berlin has a clear stance when it comes to freedom. Berlin stands firmly on Israel’s side. There is no doubt about that. Full responsibility for the deep suffering in Israel and the Gaza Strip lies with Hamas.”
This isn’t the first time Wegner has defended Israel. In May, he supported Berlin’s police force when they removed pro-Hamas demonstrators from Humboldt University. Accusing the protesters of promoting a terrorist organization, Wegner stated, “I will not let this pass, we do not tolerate anti-Semitism, hatred, and agitation at our universities.” He emphasized that academic freedom does not include the right to promote violence or support groups like Hamas, which both Germany and the United States have designated as terrorist organizations.
Wegner’s leadership sends a powerful message: Germany will not allow itself to be swayed by misinformation or propaganda aimed at demonizing Israel. As long as Hamas continues its reign of terror, Germany’s solidarity with Israel remains unshakeable.
