Army Veteran Defends Trump’s Arlington Ceremony Amid Criticism
Lucas O’Hara praises Trump's respect and solemnity in honoring fallen soldiers.
U.S. Army veteran Lucas O’Hara has come forward to defend former President Donald Trump’s participation in a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. The ceremony, held to honor the 13 American service members killed during the Biden administration’s chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan, has sparked a heated debate over its appropriateness in the context of Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.
Key points of the controversy include:
Critics, including MSNBC’s Mike Barnicle, accused Trump of using the ceremony as a political prop, questioning whether such a solemn occasion should be associated with a campaign.
O’Hara, who attended the ceremony, countered these claims, describing the event as “the most respectful and solemn ceremony” he had ever witnessed, with no political grandstanding or opportunistic photo ops.
Trump, accompanied by former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, spent considerable time with the families of the fallen, a gesture that O’Hara noted was unprecedented in his experience with political figures.
On MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Mike Barnicle criticized Trump’s presence at the cemetery, suggesting that it was inappropriate for any political candidate to use such "sacred ground" for campaign purposes. Barnicle’s remarks reflected a broader narrative pushed by some media outlets, painting Trump’s attendance as a spectacle rather than a genuine tribute.
However, Lucas O’Hara, a veteran who served in the Presidential Honor Guard and has attended numerous such ceremonies, provided a starkly different perspective. In a detailed Instagram post, O’Hara praised Trump for his genuine respect and commitment during the ceremony. “I have witnessed over 75 wreath-laying ceremonies performed by politicians and conducted 524 funerals in this cemetery during the time I served in the Presidential Honor Guard for three years,” O’Hara wrote, calling Trump’s participation “the most respectful and solemn ceremony I have seen.”
O’Hara emphasized that there were no speeches or attempts at political maneuvering during the event. Instead, he observed Trump spending an extraordinary amount of time with the families of the fallen soldiers, offering his condolences and showing true empathy. “I watched President Trump spend more time at the graves with the families than I have ever seen a political representative do before … just him truly showing gratitude and love to these families for their loss,” O’Hara stated.
The veteran’s account is further supported by the families of the fallen, who expressed their gratitude for Trump’s presence and dismissed the idea that the event was politically motivated. They confirmed that they had approved the presence of photographers to respectfully capture the ceremony, ensuring that the moment would be preserved with dignity.
O’Hara’s reflections challenge the narrative of those who criticize Trump’s involvement, highlighting the importance of separating political biases from the reality of the event. “No matter what the party, this is what I look for in my elected officials. Americans ready to serve and support Americans,” O’Hara concluded, underscoring the importance of genuine leadership and compassion in times of national mourning.
