Army Sergeant Reunites With Retired Military Dog for the Holidays

After years of separation, Staff Sergeant Payton May and Yyacob share a heartwarming reunion.

This holiday season brought a heartwarming reunion as U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Payton May was reunited with Yyacob, a Belgian Malinois and his former military working dog. The pair had been separated for over two years after May was reassigned to another base in 2022. When Yyacob retired after seven years of service, May knew he wanted to adopt the dog he calls his “best friend.”

With the help of American Humane, an organization dedicated to reuniting retired Military Working Dogs with their handlers, May’s wish came true. The reunion took place Monday, just in time for the holidays.

May and Yyacob, an explosives detection and patrol dog, served together for nine months in Iraq. Their duties included scanning vehicles, patrolling the base, and ensuring the safety of service members by detecting explosives. The duo also completed the elite Patrol Explosive Detection Dog – Enhanced Course, training Yyacob to work effectively off-leash, a skill crucial in high-risk scenarios.

Yyacob’s service extended beyond Iraq. During his seven-year career, he protected not just fellow soldiers but also civilians and even presidents, leaving a legacy of courage and dedication.

Thanks to American Humane, Yyacob will enjoy a well-deserved retirement alongside his beloved handler. Dr. Robin Ganzert, President and CEO of American Humane, expressed gratitude for facilitating the reunion.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to bring military working dog Yyacob home and reunite him with his best friend,” Ganzert said. The organization will also provide Yyacob with free lifetime veterinary care.

“American Humane is honored to help give this courageous canine the comfortable retirement he deserves after seven years of distinguished service to our country,” Ganzert added.

May, who is preparing for his next station in Italy, is thrilled to have Yyacob back in his life even if it means sharing his bed. “I can’t wait to have him close again,” May said.

As they celebrate the holidays together, May and Yyacob’s story is a testament to the enduring bond between service members and their canine partners, reminding us all of the sacrifices made and the love shared by those who serve.
