AOC Threatens Impeachment Over SCOTUS Immunity Ruling

Congresswoman Criticizes Court's Decision on Presidential Immunity.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has announced her intention to file articles of impeachment against members of the U.S. Supreme Court following their ruling on presidential immunity. The decision, which determined that presidents are immune from criminal prosecution for official acts but not for unofficial conduct, was passed with a 6-3 vote along ideological lines.

The ruling, which sent a case involving former President Donald Trump back to a lower D.C. court for further review, stated, “The President is not above the law. But under our system of separated powers, the President may not be prosecuted for exercising his core constitutional powers, and he is entitled to at least presumptive immunity from prosecution for his official acts.”

In response, Ocasio-Cortez took to X, expressing her outrage: “The Supreme Court has become consumed by a corruption crisis beyond its control. Today’s ruling represents an assault on American democracy. It is up to Congress to defend our nation from this authoritarian capture. I intend on filing articles of impeachment upon our return.”

  • Conservative Backlash: The reaction to AOC’s declaration was swift. AG Hamilton, a popular conservative legal commentator on X, criticized the congresswoman, saying, “Filing articles of impeachment against SCOTUS because they ruled in a way you don’t like is an actual assault on our system. It’s indicative of someone who does not take their oath to the Constitution seriously and doesn’t belong anywhere near a position of authority.”

  • Legal Experts Weigh In: Attorney Julie Hamill also weighed in, calling AOC’s comments “dangerous insurrection talk” and highlighting her lack of legal education. “This is dangerous insurrection talk from a woman who has never gone to law school and learned about the three branches of government while on the job in Congress,” Hamill said.

  • Political Responses: Representative Greg Murphy (R-NC) added his voice to the criticism, dismissing Ocasio-Cortez's comments as mere theatrics. “Just be quiet,” Murphy urged. “People are so damn tired of the theatrics.”

This latest episode underscores the growing tensions and divisions in Washington, particularly regarding the balance of power between the branches of government. Ocasio-Cortez's threat to impeach Supreme Court justices highlights the escalating confrontations over judicial decisions that have significant implications for presidential powers and democratic accountability.
