AOC Loses Bid for Top Democrat Role on Oversight Committee
House Democrats choose veteran lawmaker Gerry Connolly over the Squad’s rising star.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), one of the most high-profile members of the progressive “Squad,” lost her bid to become the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee. In a decisive vote on Tuesday, House Democrats selected Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) over Ocasio-Cortez, signaling a preference for experienced leadership over youthful progressivism.
The vote wasn’t particularly close: Connolly secured 131 votes to Ocasio-Cortez’s 84, aligning with the recommendation of the Democrats’ Steering and Policy Committee. Backed by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Connolly’s pitch emphasized his extensive experience and commitment to defending the Biden administration from Republican-led investigations.
In his victory statement, Connolly thanked colleagues for their support, writing, “I thank my colleagues for their support and the confidence they’ve placed in me to lead House Democrats on the Oversight Committee.”
Ocasio-Cortez, currently the vice-ranking member of the Oversight Committee, framed her campaign around a populist message aimed at fighting for the working class. At just 35 years old, she has quickly become a prominent figure in Democratic circles since unseating then-Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-NY) in 2018. However, her progressive platform and relatively short tenure in Congress may have worked against her in this leadership contest.
According to Max Cohen of Punchbowl News, Connolly’s focus on institutional knowledge and his ability to deliver results outweighed Ocasio-Cortez’s appeal to younger, progressive Democrats.
At 74, Connolly brings a wealth of experience to the role. A member of Congress since 2009, Connolly has served on the Oversight Committee throughout his tenure. Recently diagnosed with esophageal cancer, Connolly has vowed to continue his work while undergoing treatment. His track record includes staunch opposition to Republican-led initiatives, such as the Biden impeachment inquiry and the so-called "weaponization" of federal agencies.
In a letter to his colleagues, Connolly promised to push back against GOP efforts to “promote conspiracy theories, intimidate witnesses, and undermine democratic processes.” He positioned himself as a defender of the Biden administration and a leader capable of navigating the GOP-controlled committee.
Connolly’s selection over Ocasio-Cortez underscores the Democratic Party’s continued reliance on seasoned lawmakers to hold key positions, particularly as the GOP ramps up investigations into Biden-era policies. While AOC has built a formidable platform within the party’s progressive wing, her defeat highlights the challenges younger members face in securing leadership roles.
As Democrats gear up for 2024, this vote signals that institutional experience and pragmatism remain central to the party’s strategy in navigating the next session of Congress.
