Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) suffered a blow on Monday in her effort to become the top Democrat on the influential House Oversight Committee, as the party’s Steering and Policy Committee voted to back Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) for the role. The vote 34-27 in Connolly’s favor signals hesitation among House Democrats to elevate Ocasio-Cortez, a key figure of the leftist “Squad.”
While the Steering Committee’s recommendation typically dictates the outcome, the full Democratic caucus will hold its final vote on Tuesday. AOC’s allies remain hopeful that the progressive firebrand could rally enough support when the entire caucus weighs in.
“AOC has a real shot to win inside the full Democratic Caucus,” one Democrat insider told Punchbowl News, suggesting that the broader caucus may be more receptive to her bid than the steering panel.
The competition between Ocasio-Cortez and Connolly highlights an ongoing divide within the Democratic Party between its far-left wing and establishment veterans. At 35, AOC is pitching herself as part of the next generation of leadership, aligning with younger progressives eager to reshape the party.
In a letter to her colleagues, Ocasio-Cortez framed her candidacy as essential to countering President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming administration:
“Oversight Committee Democrats must balance our focus on the incoming president’s corrosive actions and corruption with a tangible fight to make life easier for America’s working class,” AOC wrote.
However, Connolly, 74, has the backing of Democratic leaders, including former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). Pelosi, recovering from hip surgery, reportedly lobbied behind the scenes to secure Connolly’s leadership on the committee.
The House Oversight Committee plays a critical role in holding the federal government accountable and investigating matters of national concern. With Republicans maintaining control of the committee, the ranking Democrat will have the responsibility of steering the party’s response to GOP-led investigations, which are likely to focus on Biden administration scandals and corruption.
The contest also underscores tensions within the Democratic Party:
Age Divide: AOC represents a growing push for younger leaders, while Connolly reflects a preference for experience among establishment Democrats.
Ideological Rift: Progressives like Ocasio-Cortez advocate for a combative, left-leaning agenda, while moderates favor a more measured approach to opposition.
Despite losing the Steering Committee vote, AOC has signaled her intention to press forward, betting that the full Democratic caucus may favor her populist message. Whether she can overcome party leadership’s preference for Connolly remains to be seen, but her willingness to challenge the establishment demonstrates her rising influence and ability to shape debates within the party.
As Democrats prepare for a contentious two years with Republicans in charge of key committees, the outcome of this battle will reveal whether the party embraces its progressive wing or leans on old-guard leadership to weather the storm.
