The Chicks Set to Perform National Anthem at Democratic National Convention

Anti-War Country Group's Appearance Sparks Controversy Ahead of 2024 Elections.

The Democratic National Convention (DNC) is poised to kick off with yet another display of celebrity endorsement, as the anti-war country group, The Chicks, formerly known as the Dixie Chicks, are reportedly set to sing the national anthem. The trio—Emily Strayer, Martie Maguire, and Natalie Maines—will be in Chicago to open the event, where Vice President Kamala Harris is expected to be officially named the Democratic presidential nominee.

The Chicks have long been a lightning rod for controversy. Their outspoken criticism of President George W. Bush during the Iraq War era nearly ended their careers when they were blacklisted by country radio stations nationwide. Natalie Maines, the lead vocalist, infamously told a London audience, "We do not want this war, this violence and we’re ashamed that the president of the United States is from Texas." The backlash from country music fans was immediate and fierce, with many accusing the group of being unpatriotic.

This isn’t the first time The Chicks have aligned themselves with the Democratic Party. They appeared virtually at the 2020 DNC, showcasing their continued support for left-leaning causes. Their presence at this year’s convention only underscores the Democratic Party’s reliance on entertainment figures to push their political agenda.

But The Chicks aren’t the only polarizing performers scheduled for the event. Rabid anti-abortion advocate Pink is also expected to perform on the convention’s final night. Pink, known offstage as Alecia Moore, has a history of aggressive rhetoric against conservatives, particularly following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. In a 2022 tweet, she told her pro-life fans to stop listening to her music and used profane language to make her point clear. Pink's explicit activism has become a hallmark of her public persona, making her a fitting choice for the DNC's grand finale.

As the Democrats prepare to showcase their celebrity supporters, one can’t help but wonder if the voices they’re amplifying truly resonate with everyday Americans. While these stars might draw headlines, it’s unclear whether their divisive messages will translate into the kind of widespread support the Democrats desperately need heading into the 2024 election.
