Thune Says Trump ‘Probably Joking’ About Seeking Third Term

As usual, Trump drops a comment and the press scrambles to spin it into chaos.

Donald Trump knows exactly how to get under the media’s skin and he’s done it again with a few offhanded comments about a potential third term. Now, the D.C. press corps is in full hysteria mode, trying to twist every word into a constitutional crisis.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, no Trump cheerleader himself, offered the most grounded take of the week “He’s probably having some fun with it and probably messing with you.”

Exactly.

Trump recently told NBC’s Kristen Welker that he wasn’t joking about the idea of a third term, but quickly added it was “far too early to think about it.” That one line was enough to send journalists and Democrats into a frenzy, ignoring the context and tone entirely again.

Let’s break it down:

  • The 22nd Amendment, passed after FDR’s four-term power grab, prohibits a president from serving more than two elected terms. Trump knows this. Everyone knows this.

  • Despite the law, a symbolic House resolution to amend the Constitution was introduced by Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN), arguing Trump deserves what FDR got.

  • Trump floated a scenario where a future VP (like JD Vance) could “pass the baton” back to him. Clearly theoretical yet the media clutched their pearls like it was a coup plot.

It’s textbook Trump: say something tongue-in-cheek, watch the media panic, and highlight how utterly humorless and unhinged they’ve become. And let’s be honest, if Biden or any Democrat made a similar joke, the press would call it “bold” or “visionary.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt nailed it when she said reporters keep asking Trump about this, he responds with a smile, and “everybody here melts down about his answer.” She’s right. The real issue isn’t Trump’s comments it’s the media’s obsession with twisting them.

Meanwhile, Americans are watching inflation eat away their paychecks, the border remains a disaster zone, and crime continues to surge in Democrat-run cities. But sure, let’s make Trump’s third-term joke the national headline.

The bottom line: Trump isn’t announcing a third-term campaign. He’s trolling the people who deserve to be trolled. And they still haven’t figured it out.
