Trump Administration Sues Colorado and Denver Over Sanctuary Policies

Lawsuit slams Colorado officials for undermining federal immigration enforcement and enabling criminal gangs like Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua.

The Trump administration is taking a bold step to restore law and order in American cities by suing both the state of Colorado and the city of Denver over their dangerous “sanctuary” policies that defy federal immigration law and shield illegal immigrants from deportation even violent criminals.

The lawsuit, filed Friday in Colorado District Court by the Department of Justice, asserts that Colorado and Denver’s sanctuary laws violate the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution. This clause makes clear that federal law is the highest law of the land and that states cannot pick and choose which parts to ignore.

“The United States has well-established, preeminent, and preemptive authority to regulate immigration matters,” the DOJ lawsuit states.

At the center of the case is a horrific example of what happens when local officials defy federal immigration enforcement the rise of Tren de Aragua (TdA), a Venezuelan criminal gang that, according to federal authorities, took over an apartment complex in Aurora, just outside of Denver.

Despite local officials trying to downplay the severity of the situation, residents and law enforcement admit the complex was terrorized and yes, some of the perpetrators had ties to the gang. This isn’t just a policy disagreement it’s a matter of public safety.

Sanctuary policies are actively preventing ICE from doing its job. These reckless laws:

  • Forbid local police and sheriffs from honoring ICE detainer requests.

  • Block cooperation with federal agents trying to detain and deport illegal aliens.

  • Allow violent criminals to remain in communities rather than be deported.

This isn’t just happening in Colorado. The DOJ has filed similar lawsuits against sanctuary policies in Chicago and Rochester, New York Democrat-run cities that seem more interested in virtue signaling than protecting American citizens.

Let’s be clear: these sanctuary laws don’t “welcome” immigrants they protect lawbreakers and encourage lawlessness. The results are tragic and predictable: rising crime, overwhelmed local services, and American families paying the price for political grandstanding.

While Democrat leaders like Colorado Governor Jared Polis and Denver Mayor Mike Johnston insist they’re following the law, the facts tell a different story. The lawsuit names them directly as defendants, along with the state legislature and Attorney General Phil Weiser. Their actions or inaction have allowed criminal organizations to gain a foothold in Colorado communities.

Even as the mayors of cities like Denver, New York, and Chicago were recently dragged before Congress to explain their immigration failures, they played the victim and blamed Washington. But the truth is simple federal immigration laws exist to protect American citizens, and refusing to enforce them is a dereliction of duty.

President Trump has promised to restore order, enforce immigration law, and protect American communities from the flood of illegal immigration and gang violence. This lawsuit is just the beginning.
