Trump Rips Judge Merchan Over Refusal to Dismiss Hush-Money Case
Former President blasts gag orders, judicial bias, and alleged violations of presidential immunity.
Former President Donald Trump launched a scathing critique against Judge Juan Merchan, the presiding judge in his New York-based hush-money case, after Merchan refused to dismiss the conviction. Trump’s fiery response came shortly after the judge’s ruling, which ignored the Supreme Court’s recent decision on presidential immunity, sparking outrage among Trump supporters.
Taking to Truth Social, Trump declared Merchan’s decision “a violation of the U.S. Constitution” and characterized the gag order imposed on him as an unconstitutional restriction designed to shield the judge from scrutiny. Trump’s posts, which were later shared by his War Room account on X, called Merchan’s rulings “illegal, psychotic,” and accused the judge of corruption and bias.
Trump did not hold back, lambasting Merchan for what he described as a partisan attack on the presidency and a blatant disregard for Supreme Court precedent.
He labeled the case “a Rigged Hoax” and accused Merchan of enabling an unlawful prosecution.
Trump cited leading legal scholars who have criticized the case, including Alan Dershowitz and Gregg Jarrett, asserting that it was legally baseless and expired under the statute of limitations.
He further accused Merchan of enforcing a gag order to silence his defense, calling it a historic First Amendment violation.
In his second post, Trump reiterated that he remains the only political opponent in U.S. history restricted from defending himself publicly, framing the gag order as part of a broader effort to undermine his 2024 presidential campaign.
Merchan’s 41-page decision backed the prosecution’s argument that the evidence pertained strictly to Trump’s personal conduct, not his official duties as president. He dismissed concerns about presidential immunity, stating that the allegations did not encroach upon the executive branch’s authority.
Critics, however, argue that Merchan’s ruling contradicts the Supreme Court’s interpretation of immunity and raises questions about judicial overreach. Trump’s spokesperson Stephen Cheung condemned the decision, calling it “a direct violation” of Supreme Court precedent.
This latest clash between Trump and the judiciary highlights the ongoing weaponization of the legal system against political opponents. Trump’s criticism of Merchan aligns with a broader Republican narrative that underscores judicial bias and systemic attacks on conservative voices.
As the 2024 election looms, Trump’s supporters see these legal battles as evidence of a Democratic-led effort to derail his campaign. Trump’s call to “end the Lawfare” and unite as a nation resonates with his base, fueling their determination to fight what they perceive as a rigged system.
The battle for America’s future is far from over, and the stakes couldn’t be higher.
