Shutdown-Averting Bill Backed by Trump as a Win for Conservatives

The bill sets the stage for tax cuts, spending freezes, and advancing the MAGA agenda.

President Donald Trump is rallying Republicans behind a continuing resolution (CR) that will keep the government running while paving the way for conservative victories. Despite some GOP skepticism over stopgap measures, Trump insists that this bill is different one that conservatives will “love.”

“Government funding runs out next week, and Democrats are threatening to shut down the Government But I am working with the GREAT House Republicans on a Continuing Resolution to fund the Government until September to give us some needed time to work on our Agenda,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

Trump made it clear that this resolution isn’t about maintaining the status quo but about setting up tax cuts, spending reductions, and other America First priorities.

  • The bill effectively freezes government spending for the remainder of the fiscal year.

  • It allows for tax and spending cuts to be advanced through budget reconciliation, ensuring that conservative policies are prioritized.

  • It secures funding for national defense and border security, two of Trump’s core issues.

With a partial government shutdown looming on March 15, failure to pass a funding bill would result in non-essential federal employees being furloughed, while essential workers such as air traffic controllers and law enforcement would continue working without pay, at least temporarily.

While some House Republicans have expressed reluctance to back the CR, Trump is actively working to bring them on board. A meeting at the White House on Wednesday made significant progress in uniting the party, according to Politico.

“Who would want to stall President Trump and the American people’s agenda? Only Democrats have said they want to shut down the government,” said House Republican Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain (R-MI) in a post on X.

Trump’s messaging is clear: This is not just about avoiding a shutdown it’s about securing conservative victories in the long run.

Elon Musk, now leading the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), also met with congressional Republicans on Wednesday. His message? The federal government is bloated, and there is “a lot of opportunity to improve expenditures.”

With a strategic spending freeze, conservative tax policy on the horizon, and a clear focus on national security, Trump’s push for this bill is about much more than keeping the lights on in Washington it’s about securing the future of the America First movement.
