Trump Selects Former NFL Star Scott Turner For HUD Secretary
Turner brings experience in Opportunity Zones and community revitalization to the forefront of the new administration.
President-elect Donald Trump has named Scott Turner, a former NFL player and experienced advocate for economic development, as the next Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Turner, who served as the Executive Director of the White House Opportunity and Revitalization Council (WHORC) during Trump’s first term, is poised to bring a dynamic mix of leadership and real-world experience to the role.
Under Trump’s previous administration, Turner oversaw an ambitious effort to rejuvenate America’s most distressed communities. His leadership at WHORC coordinated 16 federal agencies and implemented over 200 policy actions, resulting in:
Over $50 billion in private investment funneled into Opportunity Zones.
Transformative economic growth in communities previously neglected by government policies.
Increased collaboration between federal agencies to streamline and amplify development projects.
Turner, working closely with former HUD Secretary Ben Carson, helped spearhead policies that empowered local communities through economic revitalization and innovative investment strategies.
Turner expressed his gratitude for the nomination, thanking Trump and recognizing the groundwork laid by Carson. “I am thrilled to continue the outstanding work we began in your last administration at HUD,” Turner said, vowing to honor the forgotten men and women left behind during the Biden administration.
Turner also highlighted his commitment to faith, family, and community, thanking his wife, Robin, and their son for their support. “We have an important mission ahead. To God be the glory. Let’s get to work!”
Turner’s impressive resume goes beyond his time on the football field. After playing nine seasons in the NFL with teams like the Washington Redskins, San Diego Chargers, and Denver Broncos, Turner transitioned to public service. He served as a Texas state representative and founded the Community Engagement & Opportunity Council (CEOC), a family-run foundation dedicated to sports, mentorship, and economic opportunity.
Turner also serves on the board of the American Cornerstone Institute and is an Associate Pastor at Prestonwood Baptist Church, highlighting his deep ties to both faith and community.
Turner’s appointment signals a renewed focus on revitalizing struggling communities and prioritizing economic growth. With his leadership, HUD is set to build on the successes of the first Trump administration and address the challenges created by years of Democratic mismanagement.
Trump praised Turner as a “visionary leader” whose dedication and expertise make him the ideal candidate to carry forward the administration’s mission. “Scott’s guidance transformed our nation’s most distressed communities, and he’s ready to do it again,” Trump said.
