Trump Team Engages in Peace Talks with Russian Officials in Saudi Arabia

Historic Talks in Saudi Arabia Aim for Lasting Peace.

American officials met with Russian counterparts in Saudi Arabia to discuss ending the war in Ukraine, signaling President Donald Trump's commitment to peace through dialogue. This high-level meeting follows Trump’s recent conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, marking a significant step toward resolving the ongoing conflict.

The U.S. delegation included Secretary of State Marco Rubio, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, who met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Yuri Ushakov, Aide to President Putin. “President Trump wants to stop the killing,” stated State Department spokeswoman Tammy Bruce, emphasizing Trump's unique position as the only world leader capable of bringing Ukraine and Russia to the negotiating table.

Key Agreements Reached:

  • Establishing a “consultation mechanism” to resolve diplomatic tensions and normalize operations at respective embassies.

  • Appointing high-level teams to develop solutions for ending the war in Ukraine.

  • Laying the groundwork for future geopolitical cooperation and economic opportunities post-conflict.

Secretary of State Rubio detailed the four principles guiding the negotiations:

  1. Restoring diplomatic functionality in Washington and Moscow.

  2. Negotiating a durable and mutually acceptable end to the conflict.

  3. Exploring geopolitical and economic cooperation following a peaceful resolution.

  4. Ensuring consistent engagement to keep the peace process moving forward.

This diplomatic initiative showcases Trump’s leadership in international relations, positioning the U.S. as a mediator dedicated to achieving a lasting peace. National Security Advisor Waltz stressed that the goal is not just a temporary truce but a permanent end to the conflict. “The death and destruction...is not in the interest of either country,” Waltz said, underscoring the human cost of continued fighting.

Notably, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was excluded from the meeting and remains firm in his stance against any agreements made without Ukrainian involvement. “I will never accept any decisions between the United States and Russia about Ukraine,” Zelensky said, maintaining that any resolution must be made with Ukraine’s full participation.

This diplomatic effort reflects Trump's strategic approach to international conflict resolution. By engaging directly with Russian officials, he demonstrates the power of negotiation over prolonged warfare. If successful, these talks could reshape global alliances and bring an end to a war that has cost thousands of lives.
