Trump Anticipated to Choose Rubio as Secretary of State
A foreign policy hawk, Rubio aims to restore American strength abroad.
As Donald Trump prepares for a second term in office, insiders report that he plans to nominate Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) for Secretary of State. Known for his strong stance on foreign policy, Rubio’s expected appointment signals a major push to reassert American leadership on the global stage, particularly in key geopolitical hotspots like China, Iran, and Russia.
The New York Times reported that sources close to Trump say the president-elect has “settled” on Rubio, who has built a reputation as a staunch advocate for U.S. strength abroad. Rubio, who has often backed Trump’s positions on global security, has recently called for decisive action in Ukraine, suggesting that the current stalemate needs to end with a diplomatic solution. His alignment with Trump on issues like China's economic threat and Iran’s nuclear ambitions positions him as a Secretary of State who will aim to check America’s adversaries and restore the nation's credibility.
China and Iran: Rubio has been one of Congress's most vocal critics of both China’s growing influence and Iran’s regional ambitions. He has repeatedly argued that the U.S. must counteract China's economic manipulation and aggressive posturing in the South China Sea. Rubio is also a proponent of maintaining sanctions on Iran and has called for harsher repercussions for its nuclear activities.
Aligning with Trump’s “Peace Through Strength” Vision: Trump’s foreign policy approach is guided by the idea that America's security lies in projecting strength. Rubio’s hawkish views on China and his commitment to a powerful U.S. stance against rogue states align him well with this doctrine, suggesting he will pursue policies that prioritize American interests without unnecessary entanglements.
Meanwhile, Trump has selected Rep. Mike Waltz (R-FL) as his national security adviser, a role that bypasses the Senate and places Waltz directly in the president's inner circle. A Green Beret veteran with firsthand knowledge of combat and counterterrorism, Waltz is expected to serve as a bridge between military intelligence and Trump’s national security goals. Known for his stance against the Chinese Communist Party, Waltz will likely help advance a tough approach to China and other foreign threats. His background brings a “peace through strength” mentality that underscores Trump’s overarching policy objectives.
The new administration is also filling key roles with appointees known for their commitment to a robust America:
U.N. Ambassador Elise Stefanik (R-NY): A strong advocate for the U.S. on the global stage, Stefanik will represent American interests in the United Nations.
Border Czar Tom Homan: The former acting ICE director, Homan will oversee border security, focusing on curbing illegal immigration and enforcing stronger immigration laws.
EPA Chief Lee Zeldin: A former congressman from New York, Zeldin is set to reshape the Environmental Protection Agency, prioritizing policies that balance environmental stewardship with American industry interests.
The combination of Rubio at the State Department and Waltz as national security adviser demonstrates Trump’s resolve to put foreign policy and national security at the forefront of his agenda. With experienced hawks in top roles, Trump is positioning his administration to focus on strengthening American interests, restoring diplomatic respect, and ensuring security at home.
