Trump Nominates Kristi Noem as Secretary of Homeland Security
South Dakota Governor to Lead Efforts on Border Security in Trump’s Next Administration.
President-elect Donald Trump announced Tuesday night that South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem will serve as his Secretary of Homeland Security, marking a pivotal step in his administration’s renewed focus on securing the U.S. border. Noem, known for her tough stance on border issues, will work closely with Trump’s newly appointed Border Czar, Tom Homan, to tackle immigration enforcement head-on.
“Kristi has been very strong on Border Security,” Trump stated, underscoring his confidence in Noem’s ability to lead DHS with a firm commitment to securing the southern border. Trump cited his long-standing professional relationship with Noem, describing her as essential to his mission to “Make America Safe Again.”
Noem, the first female governor of South Dakota, brings years of experience to the role. Elected in 2018 after serving as the state’s lone U.S. Representative, Noem has consistently supported robust law enforcement and conservative immigration policies. In her acceptance, Noem highlighted her dedication to restoring security, saying, “With Donald Trump, we will secure the Border, and restore safety to American communities so that families will again have the opportunity to pursue The American Dream.”
Partnering with former ICE Director Tom Homan, Noem’s leadership at DHS will focus on aggressive border security measures, enhanced vetting, and initiatives to prevent unlawful crossings. Trump’s decision to pair Noem with Homan underscores a strategic, no-nonsense approach to border enforcement, aiming to address the surge in illegal immigration seen under the current administration.
As the Biden administration leaves DHS mired in controversy and lax enforcement, Trump and Noem’s collaboration signals a sharp pivot back to prioritizing border integrity and national security. This nomination promises a strong start toward restoring order and protecting American communities from the threats posed by open-border policies.
With current challenges at the southern border and within DHS itself, Noem’s leadership may be the change needed to enact effective policies. Her experience as a state leader, business owner, and advocate for conservative values positions her well to take on this critical role in the Trump administration.
