Trump Considers Deploying National Guard to D.C. to Fight Crime Surge

President signals possible end to D.C. self-rule as violent crime and lawlessness spiral out of control.

President Donald Trump isn’t ruling out sending in the National Guard to Washington, D.C., as the capital city continues to reel from violent crime, lawlessness, and what many describe as failed local leadership.

Speaking to reporters at the White House on Wednesday, Trump said he was considering multiple options to restore order including federalizing D.C. law enforcement and revoking the city’s limited self-governance under the D.C. Home Rule Act.

“We’re considering it, yeah, because the crime is ridiculous,” Trump said. “Bringing in the National Guard, maybe very quickly, too.”

Trump’s comments come in the wake of a violent assault on 19-year-old Ed Coristine, a government staffer and rising figure in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative, who was attacked while defending a woman from a carjacking. Two juveniles have been arrested, but the incident along with dozens of others has reignited calls for federal intervention.

“You know, we just almost lost a young man. Beautiful, handsome guy who got the hell knocked out of him,” Trump said. “There’s too much of it.”

The president emphasized that if D.C. leadership won’t act, he will. On Tuesday, he posted an image of a battered Coristine to Truth Social, warning that federalization is on the table if the city can’t clean up its act.

This wouldn’t be the first time Trump has used federal forces to stabilize a city in crisis. Earlier this year, he deployed the National Guard to Los Angeles in response to anti-ICE riots, successfully restoring order after weeks of left-wing chaos.

“We’re going to beautify the city,” Trump added. “You’re going to be safe … walking down streets.”

Elon Musk, who has collaborated with Coristine through DOGE, praised Trump’s response and pledged support. But predictably, Democrats are already crying foul.

Eleanor Holmes Norton, D.C.’s non-voting delegate in Congress, responded on X. “DC’s violent crime rate is at a 30-year low,” she claimed, denying Trump’s authority to intervene without congressional approval.

That claim doesn’t pass the smell test especially with high-profile assaults, carjackings, and brazen daylight robberies becoming routine in D.C.’s once-prestigious corridors.

And as Trump pointed out, the legal groundwork is already being laid.

“The lawyers are already studying” the possibility of reversing the Home Rule Act, Trump confirmed. “This has to be the best-run place in the country, not the worst-run place in the country.”

Key context:

  • D.C.’s Home Rule Act allows limited local self-governance, but Congress and by extension, the president retains ultimate control.

  • Multiple Republicans have already called for stripping D.C. of Home Rule after years of mismanagement, pro-crime policies, and far-left political grandstanding.

  • Trump has vowed to restore law and order, making the nation’s capital a symbol of what strong leadership can accomplish.

The Biden administration, for all its rhetoric about equity and inclusion, has abandoned D.C. to crime and decay. President Trump is sending a message: enough is enough.

If D.C. officials won’t protect their own citizens or brave staffers like Ed Coristine then America’s Commander-in-Chief will.
