Trump Appoints Sean Duffy as Interim NASA Chief
Transportation Secretary takes the helm after billionaire nominee pulled over ties to Democrats and Elon Musk.

President Donald Trump has tapped Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to serve as interim administrator of NASA, marking another decisive personnel move as he continues reshaping the federal government with America-first leadership.
The announcement, made Wednesday via Truth Social, follows Trump’s decision to withdraw the nomination of billionaire astronaut and businessman Jared Isaacman, who faced mounting scrutiny over his political ties and close relationship with Elon Musk.
"I am directing our GREAT Secretary of Transportation, Sean Duffy, to be Interim Administrator of NASA," Trump said. "He will be a fantastic leader of the ever more important Space Agency, even if only for a short period of time."
Duffy, a former congressman and current head of the Department of Transportation, has earned praise for his aggressive infrastructure overhaul, modernizing the nation’s air traffic control systems and leading high-efficiency rebuilding projects across the country. Trump applauded Duffy for making America’s transportation network “efficient and beautiful, again.”
The move comes after weeks of behind-the-scenes drama. Trump originally nominated Jared Isaacman, a private astronaut and tech billionaire, to lead NASA a choice reportedly influenced by Elon Musk. But after uncovering that Isaacman had donated to Democrats and maintained close business ties with Musk, Trump pulled the nomination.
"I thought it inappropriate that a very close friend of Elon, who was in the Space Business, run NASA," Trump said. "My Number One charge is to protect the American Public!"
Trump’s decision sends a clear message: NASA will not be handed over to a corporate ally of a political opponent, no matter how experienced or credentialed they appear on paper. Isaacman responded by claiming to be a “right-leaning moderate,” though admitted his donations to Democrats, while trying to downplay his connection to Musk.
Musk fired back with a personal defense, calling Isaacman “competent and good-hearted,” but the damage was done. Trump's pivot to Duffy shows he’s not interested in appeasing billionaire insiders or Silicon Valley elites he wants trusted, proven leadership.
With Duffy now at the helm of the nation’s top space agency, NASA is likely to adopt a more streamlined, mission-focused direction, aligned with Trump’s broader goals: revitalizing American space dominance without the bureaucracy or globalist entanglements that have slowed progress for decades.
Duffy’s appointment may be temporary, but it signals the kind of personnel decisions we can expect under a Trump administration committed to restoring accountability, efficiency, and America First leadership from Earth to orbit.
