Trump Appoints Musk and Ramaswamy to Lead New Department of Government Efficiency
Ambitious “Manhattan Project” aims to slash waste, overhaul federal bureaucracy by 2026.
In a bold move aimed at transforming the federal government, President-elect Donald Trump announced Tuesday that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will head the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Tasked with streamlining bureaucracy, cutting waste, and driving structural reform, Musk and Ramaswamy are expected to bring an entrepreneurial mindset to an administration determined to reduce government bloat.
“Together, these two wonderful Americans will dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies,” Trump stated. The initiative, labeled by Trump as the “Manhattan Project” of the current era, will apply innovative strategies from the business world to create a more agile and accountable government.
Elon Musk, known for his tech and space ventures, expressed enthusiasm for the role, vowing to send “shockwaves” through the government system. This new department’s light-hearted DOGE acronym nods to a popular meme cryptocurrency that Musk often references, symbolizing the department’s focus on shaking up traditional norms with fresh, creative approaches.
Vivek Ramaswamy, a former pharmaceutical executive and noted proponent of limited government, will work closely with Musk. Together, they’ll lead efforts to identify areas of redundancy across federal agencies, overhaul outdated regulations, and increase government accountability to taxpayers. As Trump emphasized, their task is not merely symbolic it’s backed by the administration's commitment to delivering measurable results.
According to Trump, the Department of Government Efficiency will coordinate with the White House and the Office of Management & Budget, drawing from outside expertise to reshape federal operations. With a $6.5 trillion annual budget, the U.S. government is rife with opportunities for reform, as Musk and Ramaswamy seek to eliminate inefficiencies that burden American taxpayers.
The ultimate goal is to complete this project by July 4, 2026, to commemorate America’s 250th Independence Day with a government that is smaller, leaner, and more responsive to the people. As Trump put it, “A smaller Government, with more efficiency and less bureaucracy, will be the perfect gift to America.”
Trump’s choice of Musk and Ramaswamy highlights his administration’s focus on bringing private-sector rigor to the public sector a move that has stirred excitement and optimism among those eager to see federal reform in action. The project promises sweeping change, and with a timeline in place, Americans will be watching closely to see if these ambitious plans succeed in setting a new standard for government efficiency.
