Trump Mocks Trudeau After Resignation Says Canada Should Be 51st State
Trudeau steps down amid economic woes and Trump’s tariff threats.
President-elect Donald Trump wasted no time mocking Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau following his surprise resignation announcement. In a sarcastic post on Truth Social, Trump suggested that Canada would be better off as the 51st state of the United States.
"Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State," Trump wrote.
"If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way down, and they would be TOTALLY SECURE from the threat of the Russian and Chinese Ships that are constantly surrounding them. Together, what a great Nation it would be!!!"
Trudeau’s decision to step down comes amid economic struggles, soaring inflation, and a housing crisis that have severely damaged his popularity. But many believe his downfall accelerated after Trump’s November election victory and the subsequent threat of 25% tariffs on Canadian goods.
Trudeau traveled to Mar-a-Lago in November to meet with Trump and discuss U.S.-Canada relations, but it didn’t ease tensions.
Trump mocked him relentlessly, calling him "Governor of the Great State of Canada."
Trudeau’s finance minister resigned in December, warning that Canada was "unprepared" for an economic battle with Trump.
After nearly a decade in power, Trudeau announced Monday that he will step down once a successor is chosen. His Liberal Party is trailing badly in the polls against Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, and internal dissent has made it clear that his time was up.
“This country deserves a real choice in the next election,” Trudeau said. “If I am having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election.”
Trudeau’s resignation is a huge victory for Trump and a sign that Canada is entering a new era. With the U.S. shifting its focus toward economic dominance, Trudeau’s soft leadership simply couldn’t keep up.
Could Canada ever become the 51st state? Not likely. But one thing is certain Trump is already shaping Canada’s future, whether they like it or not.
