Trump Administration Investigates University of Michigan Over Chinese Biohazard Ties

Federal probe launched after DOJ arrests reveal troubling links between Chinese operatives and one of America’s top research universities.

The Trump administration is once again taking decisive action to protect American security and sovereignty. On Tuesday, the Department of Education launched a formal investigation into the University of Michigan’s foreign funding practices a move that comes just weeks after two Chinese nationals tied to the university were arrested for attempting to smuggle dangerous biohazards into the United States.

According to Chief Investigative Counsel Paul Moore, the university has a track record of downplaying foreign threats, and the Department’s review already revealed “inaccurate and incomplete disclosures” regarding tens of millions of dollars in foreign gifts. Many of these were improperly labeled as coming from “nongovernmental entities” despite direct ties to foreign regimes.

The Trump administration’s response is swift and sweeping:

  • UM must submit documents, tax records, and all foreign agreements within 30 days.

  • All names and contact information of university researchers involved in collaborations with foreign institutions are being demanded.

  • The probe is part of President Trump’s broader executive push for transparency regarding foreign influence on U.S. campuses a much-needed reform as higher education increasingly becomes a soft target for foreign infiltration.

This investigation follows the Department of Justice's arrest of two Chinese scholars who tried to smuggle biohazardous materials into UM labs. The DOJ warned that these individuals posed a serious agricultural threat, capable of damaging America’s food supply chain.

FBI Director Kash Patel did not mince words:

“This is a sobering reminder that the CCP is working around the clock to deploy operatives and researchers to infiltrate American institutions and target our food supply.”

And this isn’t an isolated case. Earlier this year, UM was forced to terminate its partnership with China’s Shanghai Jiao Tong University after multiple Chinese students misled investigators about a suspicious trip to a U.S. military base further highlighting the ongoing threat posed by the Chinese Communist Party’s infiltration of academic institutions.

The reality is clear: under Joe Biden’s watch, these threats would be quietly swept under the rug, buried in bureaucracy and political correctness. But under Trump, these issues are being dragged into the light, and institutions are finally being held accountable.

As foreign adversaries continue to exploit America’s openness, it’s reassuring to see leadership that prioritizes national security over global appeasement.
