Trump’s Greenland Proposal Could Reshape U.S. Arctic Strategy

Former adviser outlines why securing Greenland is vital to countering Russia and China.

Former National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien has revealed that Donald Trump is serious about a bold strategy to incorporate Greenland into U.S. territory. The rationale? Strengthening national security and countering growing Russian and Chinese influence in the Arctic.

During a Sunday interview on Fox News, O’Brien discussed Greenland’s strategic importance, describing it as a “highway” connecting the Arctic to North America. With the Arctic poised to become a critical battleground due to climate changes opening up new trade routes, O’Brien emphasized that Greenland’s control could dramatically shift the balance of power.

Why Greenland Matters:

  • Arctic Dominance: Russia and China are heavily investing in the Arctic, seeking to dominate the region’s emerging shipping lanes and vast resources.

  • Strategic Location: Greenland’s proximity to North America makes it a crucial point for defense and surveillance.

  • Resource Richness: The island is home to untapped reserves of oil, minerals, and rare earth elements, essential for the U.S. economy and security.

Currently under Danish control, Greenland has become a focal point of geopolitical tension. O’Brien noted that while Denmark owns the territory, it lacks the military resources to defend it adequately.

“Denmark is now on the front lines of the war against Russia and China,” O’Brien said, likening Denmark’s strategic position to Baltic states like Poland. He argued that the U.S. should not bear the financial or military burden of defending Greenland unless Denmark steps up.

Trump’s Plan for Greenland:

  • Danish Responsibility: Denmark must invest significantly in Greenland’s defense.

  • Payment for U.S. Defense: If Denmark can’t meet the demand, it should pay the U.S. to defend Greenland.

  • Purchase Option: As a last resort, Trump has proposed purchasing Greenland, integrating it as part of Alaska to ensure its development and security.

“The days of the U.S. taxpayer defending Western Europe and its empires for free are over,” O’Brien declared. He highlighted the potential benefits for Greenland’s native population, who share cultural ties with Alaska. By becoming part of the U.S., Greenland could see unprecedented development and prosperity under American leadership.

This proposal underscores Trump’s America-first strategy: strengthening national security while ensuring fair contributions from allies. With Russian and Chinese aggression escalating, reclaiming control over strategic territories like Greenland is no longer optional it’s essential.
