Trump Calls On GOP To Nuke Senate Filibuster And End Shutdown

President urges Republicans to use full power while they control Congress and White House: “End it, and end it now.”

President Donald Trump is done playing nice with obstructionist Democrats and he’s calling on Republicans in Congress to finally go nuclear and abolish the Senate filibuster to end the ongoing government shutdown and get back to governing for the American people.

In a fiery Truth Social post late Thursday night, Trump slammed Democrats for grinding Washington to a halt while the GOP controls both chambers of Congress and the White House, calling their behavior a symptom of “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”

“The one question that kept coming up [on my Asia trip] was how did the Democrats SHUT DOWN the United States of America, and why did the powerful Republicans allow them to do it?” Trump wrote. “WHY?”

Trump isn’t wrong to ask. The shutdown is now entering week four, with no end in sight as Democrats demand trillions in new spending much of it earmarked for illegal immigrants, climate giveaways, and bloated bureaucracies.

And while Democrats previously attempted to end the filibuster under Biden but were stopped by Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema. Trump is calling on Republicans to finish the job now that they hold the power.

“Get rid of the Filibuster, and get rid of it, NOW!” Trump wrote.
“If we did what we should be doing, it would immediately end this ridiculous, country-destroying shutdown.”

Trump praised Senate Majority Leader John Thune and House Speaker Mike Johnson for doing a “GREAT job,” but urged them to play the “Trump card” and do what Democrats would do in a heartbeat.

  • The Senate filibuster currently requires 60 votes to advance most legislation, a tool often used by the minority party to stall progress.

  • In 2013, Democrat leader Harry Reid nuked the filibuster for executive branch appointments, setting the stage for Trump’s massive success in confirming conservative federal judges.

  • Democrats nearly eliminated the filibuster completely under Biden and only failed because of two defections from their own party.

“Democrats would do it on their first day,” Trump said. “Now I want to do it in order to take advantage of the Democrats.”

At the center of the current impasse is a Democratic demand to pump more taxpayer money into programs benefiting illegal immigrants, including free healthcare a move Trump says would “hurt American citizens” and “cannot be allowed.”

“They want Trillions of Dollars to be taken from our Healthcare System and given to others, who are not deserving. People who have come into our Country illegally, many from prisons and mental institutions,” Trump warned.

Trump is right: this isn’t just about spending. It’s about whether America’s elected leaders will stand up for citizens, or cave once again to a Democrat Party that weaponizes every rule, every vote, and every crisis to push its radical agenda.

The shutdown can end today if Republicans have the backbone to use the tools at their disposal and refuse to be steamrolled by a party that has already shredded every institutional norm when it suited them.

It’s time to stop pretending this is a normal opposition party. Democrats don’t play by the rules and they don’t plan to.
