President Trump to Sign Executive Order Clarifying Gender as ‘Male and Female’ Only
Incoming administration targets gender ideology with sweeping reforms on Day One.
President Donald Trump is set to issue an executive order Monday defining gender strictly as “male” and “female,” marking a significant shift in federal policy on gender identity. The order, titled “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government,” will be one of several high-profile actions Trump takes on his first day back in the Oval Office.
According to reports, the executive order will:
Officially define gender: Recognizing only “male” and “female,” with a woman defined as an “adult human female.”
Reverse existing policies: Americans will no longer be able to select “X” as a gender on passports or federal personnel records, a practice allowed since 2010.
Protect women’s spaces: The order aims to prevent men from being housed in women’s prisons and shelters, while ensuring privacy and safety in facilities like rape shelters and migrant shelters.
Ban taxpayer-funded gender transitions: Medical procedures related to gender transitions for federal prisoners and other federally funded cases will no longer be covered.
The order will also address free speech concerns, protecting Americans in workplaces and schools from being compelled to use preferred pronouns. Federal agencies will be prohibited from promoting gender ideology or funding programs that advance it.
The Department of Justice will play a key role in enforcing the new policy, with Attorney General directives ensuring compliance with Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on sex.
Gender ideology was a contentious issue during the 2024 election, with Trump positioning himself as a defender of traditional values. Television ads targeting then-Vice President Kamala Harris highlighted her support for taxpayer-funded transgender surgeries for illegal migrants and federal prisoners, contrasting it with Trump’s platform.
“Kamala is for they/them. President Trump is for you,” declared one viral campaign ad, resonating with millions of voters concerned about the implications of far-left gender policies.
The executive order is expected to face immediate challenges in court from left-wing activists and liberal organizations. Critics argue the move undermines transgender rights, while supporters say it restores clarity, protects women, and safeguards constitutional freedoms.
Trump’s Day One actions set a clear tone for his administration: a focus on reversing progressive policies and reasserting conservative principles across federal governance. As the nation awaits further executive orders on issues like immigration and energy, Trump’s strong stance against gender ideology highlights his commitment to reshaping American policy.
