Europe Escalates Trade War After Trump’s Greenland Tariff Warning

EU threatens economic retaliation as Trump prioritizes national security over globalist trade deals

President Trump’s push to secure Greenland has now triggered a full-blown trade clash with Europe, as the EU scrambles to protect Denmark’s refusal to sell the strategically vital island.

On Saturday, Trump warned that eight European Union countries along with the UK and Norway could face 25% tariffs if they continue obstructing U.S. efforts to acquire Greenland. The move sent Brussels into a panic, with the European People’s Party, the largest bloc in the EU Parliament, pulling support from a major trade deal Trump secured last year.

“Approval is not possible at this stage,” EPP President Manfred Weber said Sunday, calling for a pause on all tariff reductions on U.S. goods.

The agreement Trump negotiated with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in 2025 was set to eliminate tariffs on American goods entering the EU and cap U.S. tariffs at 15% on European imports a major win for American manufacturers and consumers. But now, because Trump dared to challenge EU authority over Greenland, globalist bureaucrats are threatening to blow it all up.

French President Emmanuel Macron is taking it even further, demanding the EU invoke its “Anti-Coercion Instrument” known as the “trade bazooka.” If enacted, the measure could:

  • Impose new retaliatory tariffs,

  • Weaken U.S. intellectual property protections in Europe,

  • Limit American investments across the EU.

Make no mistake this isn’t about trade. It’s about control.

White House officials made clear that Trump isn’t backing down. National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett said Sunday that the president views Greenland as a critical national security asset, and he's prepared to leverage America’s economic power to secure it.

“The president has a strong view that it’s a national security matter for the U.S. to have more control over Greenland,” Hassett said.

Trump’s critics both foreign and domestic continue to mock the idea of acquiring Greenland. But as Russia and China ramp up their Arctic presence, Trump sees what they don’t: Greenland is a geopolitical game-changer. It’s rich in untapped resources, provides a prime location for missile defense, and would bolster U.S. Arctic dominance for decades.

The same European leaders who depend on U.S. defense spending to protect them from Russian aggression are now crying foul because Trump dares to put America first. They’re so afraid of losing influence that they’re willing to jeopardize billions in trade to defend Denmark’s “right” to reject a peaceful, negotiated transfer of territory.

Unlike Biden and the globalist class he represents, Trump doesn’t cower when Europe threatens him. He uses America’s leverage economic, military, and diplomatic to get results that benefit U.S. workers, industries, and security.

What we’re seeing unfold is classic Trump: a bold, unapologetic strategy to put national interests ahead of globalist appeasement.

And it’s working.
