Trump to Require Truckers to Demonstrate English Proficiency for Road Safety
New executive order rolls back Obama-era policies and strengthens American unity on the highways.

President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order mandating that professional truck drivers in the United States demonstrate proficiency in English a move that champions road safety and national unity. The order, scheduled to be signed Monday at 5 p.m. Eastern, overturns an Obama-era policy that allowed non-English-speaking drivers to continue operating commercial vehicles without penalty.
According to a White House document, Trump believes English proficiency is a "non-negotiable" safety standard. Professional drivers must be able to read road signs, communicate with law enforcement and inspection officials, and follow safety regulations to ensure public safety on American roads.
The new executive order will:
Require the Department of Transportation, under Secretary Sean Duffy, to strengthen inspection procedures for English compliance.
Mandate that drivers violating English proficiency standards be placed out of service immediately.
Rescind and replace all prior guidance that weakened these essential safety requirements.
Representative Harriet Hageman (R-WY) and Kevin Hawley, President of the Wyoming Trucking Association, have been leading voices calling for this change. Hawley highlighted that many of his members are deeply concerned about highway safety risks associated with drivers who cannot read signs or communicate during emergencies.
The need for action is obvious:
A 2022 FMCSA report revealed that over 10% of violations during roadside inspections involved communication issues.
Highway fatalities reached 42,795 in 2022, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration the highest number in over a decade.
Trucking accounts for approximately 72% of all freight transported in the U.S., making safe communication on the road absolutely critical.
Trump’s order follows closely on the heels of another powerful executive decision designating English as the official language of the United States. By promoting a shared language, the Trump administration is reinforcing the values that bind Americans together and ensuring a safer, more cohesive society.
Unlike the weak leadership we endured under Obama and now Biden, Trump’s bold actions are once again putting American interests and American lives first.
