Trump DOJ Sues Six Blue States Over Voter Roll Transparency
Justice Department targets Democrat-run states for hiding voter registration data as GOP cracks down on election fraud ahead of 2026.

The Trump administration is ramping up its fight to secure America’s elections and this time, it’s taking six Democrat-run states to court for stonewalling efforts to verify their voter rolls.
On Tuesday, the Department of Justice announced lawsuits against Delaware, Maryland, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington for refusing to produce statewide voter registration lists, a basic requirement under federal election law.
Attorney General Pam Bondi issued a clear warning: “Accurate voter rolls are the cornerstone of fair and free elections, and too many states have fallen into a pattern of noncompliance with basic voter roll maintenance.”
The lawsuits accuse these blue states of violating the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) and the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) both of which require states to maintain clean, accurate lists of eligible voters and to make them available upon request. Under the Civil Rights Act of 1960, the DOJ has the right to access those records to ensure compliance.
Key facts:
The DOJ says these six states are illegally concealing registration data, including driver license numbers and partial Social Security digits which help verify whether registrants are legal voters.
Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon said the refusal to comply “interferes with our mission of ensuring that Americans have accurate voter lists” and that the DOJ “will not stand for this open defiance of federal civil rights laws.”
Rhode Island, one of the states sued, openly admitted in a letter dated September 16 that it “objects to providing” the requested information.
This comes just weeks after the DOJ filed similar suits against Michigan, California, Pennsylvania, New York, Minnesota, and New Hampshire making it clear that Trump’s Justice Department is taking election integrity seriously after years of Democrat obstruction and voter fraud denial.
Let’s be blunt: what are these blue states hiding?
We’ve heard for years from Democrats that voter fraud is “rare” or “nonexistent.” But if that’s true, why are they so afraid of sharing basic registration data? Why are they refusing to allow federal oversight of voter rolls something they’re required to do by law?
The reality is, these states are protecting bloated, outdated, and likely illegal voter rolls, and they’re panicking as Trump’s DOJ starts shining a spotlight on their dysfunction. With non-citizen voting becoming a growing threat, especially in states offering driver licenses to illegal aliens, this fight is about more than compliance it’s about the integrity of our democracy.
Even more concerning, Rhode Island’s attorney general called the suit an example of Trump “weaponizing” the DOJ. In reality, it's the first time in years the DOJ has actually enforced the law rather than twisting it for political gain.
Voter confidence is at an all-time low after the debacle of 2020, and this effort by the Trump administration to force transparency and clean up the voter rolls couldn’t come at a more critical time. The 2026 midterms are around the corner, and every single vote must count legally.
It’s about time we had a Justice Department willing to confront corruption and take on the states that are actively undermining trust in our elections.
