Trump Slaps Massive Tariffs on Canadian Steel and Aluminum Over Electricity Dispute
The president warns of even tougher measures as Canada escalates trade war tactics.

President Donald Trump announced Tuesday that he will double tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50%, striking back after Ontario imposed a 25% tariff on electricity exports to the U.S.
The new tariffs, set to take effect Wednesday morning, mark a serious escalation in trade tensions between the two countries. Trump made it clear that Canada’s actions would not go unanswered.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford threatened to cut off electricity exports to Minnesota, New York, and Michigan entirely if the U.S. doesn’t back down.
Newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney vowed to keep tariffs in place, demanding "respect" from the U.S.
Trump responded forcefully, calling Canada a “tariff abuser” and warning of further economic consequences.
Trump’s post on Truth Social made it clear that Canada would not get away with using electricity as a weapon against American states:
“Why would our Country allow another Country to supply us with electricity, even for a small area? … They will pay a financial price for this so big that it will be read about in History Books for many years to come!”
Beyond steel and aluminum, Trump threatened to impose additional tariffs on Canadian cars next month if Canada refuses to drop its “other egregious, long-time Tariffs” on U.S. goods. He also pointed out that Canada relies heavily on the U.S. for military protection, yet pays “very little” for national security.
Trump’s ultimate solution? Absorbing Canada as America’s 51st state.
“The only thing that makes sense is for Canada to become our cherished Fifty First State … Canadians’ taxes will be very substantially reduced, they will be more secure, militarily and otherwise, than ever before, there would no longer be a Northern Border problem…”
For years, Canada has taken advantage of weak U.S. leadership to impose tariffs and benefit from one-sided trade agreements. But those days are over. Trump is putting America first again.
